Why do shrooms have psilosybin/psilosyn?

I've always wondered why certain mushroom have psilocybin and psilocin? What biological purpose does it have for the mushrooms? Is it some kind of protection against contamination?

Ehhh probably no protection.  Most likely was a mutation while it "evolved" and doesn't really have a purpose except for us to consume :smile:  It wasn't protection against contamination, because they aren't any less susceptible to it.  For a second I thought maybe it was to prevent them to be eaten, since I doubt animals will be chomping shrooms that make them trip...but I doubt it works the same in animals, and even if it does the spores would survive digestion in most vegetarian animals and have some good fertilizer to colonize after it's "ejected".

Psilocybin.
Psilocin.

It can only be guessed at as to why these chemicals are present. They offer little defense (most animals can safely eat psilocybe's) and only seem to appear at the end stages of growth.

My guess has always been "it's a byproduct of their growth".
