“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

i have tons of terrence mckenna videos

he's very interesting, and good at explaining himself

if you think his lectures are empty, it makes me wonder what kind of lectures you would deem satisfying or full.

terrence mckenna is one of the only men of our time who has impressed me with his work.

I find his lectures very wordy, long-winded, and circular without actually giving anything in the way of living practical advice. Entertaining to the psyconaught and intellectual i guess, but terribly boring from a practically-minded POV.

He was a wizard of language and a master of conveying poignant ideas sensitively and directly. He possessed a mind capable of exploring the profound depth of phenomenon: he could perceive the interconnectedness of objects and events, and then reveal it to you with compelling linguistic talent.

He spoke rarely about practical method because a staple of his ideology was the idea that the birthright of every human being entitles a person to the only practical method they should ever require: psychedelic plants. Although some may disagree as to whether or not psychedelic plants are the only genuine means for accessing the "great mysterious ultimate", or even a genuine means for acheiving anything at all, this was his stance nonetheless. As a representative of a system of ideas and the people who sustain them, he is virtually unparalelled.

Speaking personally, I think he was one of the few most brilliant and fascinating minds of the 20th century.

Fame is an intoxicant, but it also is a propellant, and, for me it helps describe the trajectory of McKenna's rocket through the heavens.

Several absolutely idiotic ideas such as DNA revision and the supposed relevance of 2012 were propelled to believable status by McKenna's fame, popularity or status. This published ignorance is unfortunate and beneficial in no way to his admirers who can't determine what is of value and what is not of value in his thoughts.

Imagine if the shrimpy texan, george bush, became famous. it's kinda like that, maybe not as bad.

what kind of advice are you looking for? A video I have of his is called something like "being a technoshaman in the age of computers." Now if you were looking for practical living advice from a lecture like that... you had the wrong approach from the start. That's like expecting to learn practical advice from Alex Jones.

I watched the video and thought it was interesting... BUT I only thought it was interesting because I felt that he connected psychidelics to the big scheme of things. Now I completely believe much of what he talks about is probably true... there's another side of me saying this is all a big theory.

I believe in evolution, but while no one has found the connecting variation between two species, theories are all they have.

I'll believe my biology a little more over theology, but our biology has a way of manifesting this theology.

Who knows anything anymore? Are we to become a bunch of book-heads taking everything literally? I don't know. I know western medicine can't explain acupuncture as well as eastern/chinese medicine can and maybe it falls within that type of paradigm. But I'll never know and can't seem to ever put a period at the end of some things.

I did like how he speculated on the mushrooms relinquishing boundaries of cultures playing a major role in their evolution and reproduction... I think he's a bright man and appreciate his far-from-the-norm ideas and would agree with many of them, but at the same time I hear theories. And even though I could show you pictures of different species leading up to Homo Sapien and show you how they are so similar, in the end it would be a theory.

He's entertaining. I like his character, his deep sincere respect for nature and psychedelics, and that we could be doing better for Earth and for ourselves.

However most of his scientific theories are entertainment at best, and I agree with Wikipedia here

"His more reasonable theories are usually disregarded by the very scientists whose informed criticism is crucial for their development"

It's entertainment similar to watching a comedian. His quote on buddhism further exemplifies this (for me anyway):

"How can you be a serious Buddhist if you're not doing psychedelics?"

Well, it's a real short answer that starts with an M....

I doubt he is brilliant... or we would have to redefine brilliance at that point.

"How can you be a serious Buddhist if you're not doing psychedelics?"

Simple, the Buddha taught that it is best to abstain from intoxicants of any kind. Even his HHDL has said that drugs are just more illusion, and that we already have enough illusion as it is, without compounding the issue. This was just McKenna demonstrating his ignorance about Buddhism in general.

I think it can be very interesting to listen to this man, but i agree with the others about the too much words and theory talk. And his opinion about buddhists is also in my eyes resulting from some kind of ignorance ..
