The correlation of mental trauma and the loss of one's "soul"
    #5734017 -

If the soul is a self aware ethereal substance, why is it that the soul which is thought to incorporate the inner essence in each living being, and to be the true basis for sentience, alters upon physical head trauma?

The "essence" of a being can dramatically alter due to post-traumatic head trauma. People can change in every possible range on the spectrum. For those of you who believe in the soul, more specifically, the Judeo-Christian model of the soul, doesn't this correlation suggest that the brain driven mind is alone in determining who we are?

Indeed. Certain causes and conditions give rise to consciousness. Change the conditions and the result (consciousness) will change as well.

Perhaps material realities (traumas) can override the minds' processes, loosening the connection from body to soul in the conscious level. Protecting the soul from damage.

I see it differently. How can conscious awareness is spirit or soul self, express itself in this physical plane through a brain that is physically damaged or impaired "traumatized" in some way?

Like right now, you are very self aware. Say you wanted to communicate that awareness to us through your computer, through this message board. If your computer is damaged or impaired from functioning properly, you won't be able to do it properly. What does come through, if anything may be all fucked up. Does that mean you are on the other side of it?

We would have no way to know, if we believed you were the computer and not a person using it as a means of communication to express yourself through it.

This is why some sages remind us that we are not our bodies, mental emotional or physical.

That's a nice hypothesis and all, but it seems purely imaginative in nature.

When one attempts to invent new, unfounded theories to support existing theories in question, something is wrong.

Now that makes more sense, the ghost is dealing with a damaged shell, so to speak.

It is illogical to posit the existence of anything permanent, because all things are impermanent.

Also if you say that there is an essence that is permanent, then it is unchanging and came into existence without a cause (this is itself illogical), and would not be able to produce a result, and would be unrelated and independent of causes. Which means that such an essence would be completely independent of sentient beings.

I never said anything about permanence related to unchanging or unchanging essense itself. There fore, everything you said based on that Mis-asumption has no relevance to anything I said.

If you believe that conscious awareness is only present in sentient life with a functioning brain, then you do and thats fine with me.

Spud asked a question and I gave him another way to look at it. :sun:
