the resting place of the soul
    #1840051 - 08/22/03 11:30 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I think a lot of the people here (generally speaking) believe in a soul, or a life force, or something else of that nature {a rose by any other name} but where does such a thing take residence? Does is fit snugly within the core of the pineal gland around the whole third eye area as some have claimed? Is it something that is integrated within every single fiber of your being right down to the tiniest quark? Does it sit within some unseen loft somewhere dictating your every action as if you were some kind of a marionette puppet? Or is it mearly an illusion like so much of the rest of our existence seems to be? What do you think?

I think of the soul as my mental state. It's natural to think of it as being located within my body, because my body is where all inputs that influence my mental state are received, and my body is also the object that my mental state uses to influence other things.

In fact I think of my mental state as being located mostly within my brain, but that may be only because I have learned that I have a brain (although I've never actually seen it), and that brains are essential for mental functioning in humans.

This also fits in with what science knows about brains in general, as information processing devices. If brains are the mental hardware, then souls are the mental software that runs in those brains. A consequence of this is that when the hardware is destroyed, the soul inside is extinguished. But the same components that made up that soul may still be present in other souls, elsewhere, and some of them may perhaps come into existence again at some other time.

I find it interesting that my being feels located in my head, behind my eyes.

Granted, that's where my eyes are and what's where I see out of - but, even when I close my eyes... I certainly don't feel like my being is located in my feet.. or my finger tips. It definitely feels more like my body is some sort of shell, [substance dualism , correct?] my soul being a separate entity from it. My soul, some sort of pilot.
