What is Ego loss??

I've heard a lot of people referring to something called "Ego Loss" during mushroom trips. But i'm not very clear on what exactly it is. I've tripped once, and think i may have experienced what others are refering to as Ego Loss. I felt very self conscious, as if i were not comfortable in my own skin. Generally i am very confident in my self and my body, but during this trip i kept feeling i was very fat, and physically my whole body felt larger then i know it is in real life. If someone could explain to me what Ego Loss is i'd appreciate it. The feeling that i explained is making me a bit reluctant to trip again (among other reasons) and maybe an understanding of it would make things better next time.

"Ego loss"..sometimes called "Ego transcendence" or "Ego death", is the state of mind when one temporarily bypasses, sees through, or otherwise transcends the limits of the ego.


Often this is reported as feeling a loss of sense of self identity, no sense of time/beginning. A feeling of being connected with the universe filled with love and peace and everything being one. The other side of this spectrum could be utter chaos, depending on your worldview and beliefs.

The ego is not some annoying obstacle to be rid of. It is a tool for spiritual growth, and has many lessons to teach us. One must not struggle against the ego, but flow with it, understand it, accept it, and become one with it. This is transcending the ego.


To go through ego loss, in laymans terms.. is to transcend the limits of the ego/individual personality, and become more aware of our existance as eternal spiritual beings.

I think the EGO keeps us from spiritual growth and as long as we rely on Ego for anything, including to obtain a higher spiritual plane, we give the ego more strength to keep us from "god". Ego loss to me is the temporary disconnection to self. It is a merging with everything. Ego denotes the individual. So to lose Ego is to lose individuality. You become one with all things that exist on both the spiritual and physical levels. The fact that you were feeling fat tells me that you were wrapped up in ego. When you lose ego, you feel everything all at once. You will know it when it happens. I don't know that it is something that I can explain in such a way that it can be completely understood. Anyhow, that's my 2 cents.

Guess I didn't diagree with you really. I disagreed with only a small part of that definition. I think ego is something we learn. It isn't natural.

Wow! I cannot agree LESS with this definition O_O

Whats described here are transpersonal phenomena and these are heaped into one with ego death, which is a completely other thing.

Ego Death is being annihilated and violently destroyed at all possible levels, being torn away from life, dying.

It's a death/rebirth experience thats the hardest thing a person can go through. To put this on the same heap as the wonderful transpersonal phenomena is totally wrong.

Ego Death is the worst ordeal known to man, whilst transpersonal phenomena are the rewards beyond it.

Most trippers have had transpersonal phenomena, but only a few have truly been through the full process of ego death.

Ego Death is a process which you go through. It's something to fear immensely, but if you go through it successfully, which it is for, it is the best thing that can ever happen to you.

For most people its a series of at least twenty trips with increasingly horrible death sequences.
Basically you can call it an Ego Reboot. Just like you shouldn't phuck with your keyboard and your mouse when your OS is rebooting, you should let Ego Death take its course.

If you do not, your Operating System (Ego) can crash, and thats a lot closer to that happened to SB than Ego Death itself.

my opinion is this: ego loss is when you completly loose who you are. you do not recognise yourself in anyway, in fact, you dont even think of yourself. you are pure consiousness

I've had "ego loss" many times, that is the transcendence of the ego and the ability to mentally step outside of yourself and begin lucid thought that is normally unattainable.

I've had "ego death" only once, and that, as Wiccan_Seeker described it, is very much the utter annihilation of one's self. To be brief, it was my first high dose mushroom experience, 4g(dry) of cyanescens, and I literally experienced death. I could not have picked a better setting for death to take hold of me - the end of a pier on a bitter cold lake in 40 degree November weather.

When your ego dies, you know it. You have become, in all reality (in your mind, at least) dead. In fact, when I "awoke" from this ego death, the world was gray, and slowly began fading back to color, as I tasted blood in my mouth (though I was not bleeding) and walked back towards my friends on the beach. It is a really life-changing experience.

To me its when the switch goes off from just being hella high to transcending into another dimension. This dimension occurs when a spike of rapid evolving conscious occurs, As ones conscious rapidly evolves, basic concepts dissolve, for thats whats happen when you become extremely aware of the basic concepts that we grasp when holding on to our reality, Such as the concept of time, time as we see it becomes totally irrelevant, time does not exist in this dimension, this adjustment if not prepared can be very scary, other basic concepts become irrelevant because they no longer hold the same meaning. As these concepts become irrelevant our ego becomes irrelevant or loses meaning, As the meanings of these basic concepts dissolve our egos dissolve with it. For egos are built upon these concepts, in short we're no longer basic humans with basic intellectual capacities, but more of a spiritual intellectual capacity. In this state I find certain human concepts to be feeble and irrelevant. Certain aspirations seem to be pointless and vain, In my ego loss experience I've found that much politics, much religion is pointless and a waste of time, for example.

My experience with what i call ego loss might be referred to by some as "extreme spacing out" while tripping (i assume maybe possible w/o tripping, not for me).

For instance, i will be listening to somafm.com spacing hard on some badass photography galleries that i "stumbled" upon (stumbleupon.com) and while staring, the picture will litterly "come alive" (such as a girl in a photograph will start moving around, laughing, talking (visually, i cant hear it) etc, and also with a lot of non-photograph pictures... i would be staring at these and everything in my visual spectrum fractals\fades out and the picture expands and takes over my whole field of vision... as I'm litterly "pulled into it" and taken to a completely different place (such as this once, a temple like place with these big moving entities in the middle of what would be the statue area, although the pic was a landscape, completely unrelated to where i went). This, i consider, a form of ego loss...

The complete immersion in a reality of that beyond your senses.... total disconnection of awareness of the room your in, friends around you, or that you were staring at a picture, just an immersion into this completely new world.... shaking + blinking and being back in your chair with your friends to the left and right...

That, to me, is ego lost... out of body experience... whatever... and a good way for ppl who haven't done it to learn (sit really still about 2 feet away from a big high res monitor w/ images, or a big poster... and just stare, let tunnel-vision take its effect, and let the world around you melt away into a a truly different plane.  :tongue2:

The first time I tripped, I ate about 2.6g cubes. There were four of us, three tripping. During the plateau we were all walking around the quiet residential roads of my friend's neighborhood where the house we were at was. The whole time I was in a glass bubble, seeing everything warp around my field of vision. I frequently would turn my head to one side to say something to the person I thought was walking next to me, only to realize that they weren't there..it was myself I felt I was walking next to. Very bizzarre. I don't know what to call this aside from an out of body sensation, however I guess it's hardly related to this topic. Oh well, sorry.

Ego is just that part of your brain which decides what is "cool" and what is "uncool", it's all personal and selfish.
but ego is important when it comes time for sex or eating, or living in the world. the ego stays intact, all you can do is dissolve it, and slowing reshape your character using the lessons that come during ego loss.

imagine a man who's like a drummer for a band, and he thinks he's cool, and he gets all kinds of chicks n stuff, and he's got tons of tattoos on his arms, of monsters n stuff, which all the teenage girls drool over.
so he is very proud of Who He Is (or who he thinks he is)

then he takes LSD-
while he's tripping, his conscious can enter into a level where he's forced to look at the world free from opinions.
because everything he seeing seems so new, his mind is just watching it for the first time, and he has no opinions,
this is sort of a return to innocence
suddenly the man looks down at his arms, thinking to look at something beautiful,
and seeing these old monsters and stuff, in a sort of childish drunkeness.
he wishes he could remove them, or maybe change them at least.
he is feeling whole for the first time
and his tattos just a distraction, a mask.
long ago it use to be about individuality and strength
but now it's just a fashion

at this point some people will decide they don't like lsd
because they can't handle ego loss

the warrior will examine himself
and examine the ways he's been living wrongly
and do what is clearly right and whole for now on
but.... the ego always comes back

the key is just understanding the right time and place for ego-loss and ego-usage

business and devouring food and sex is impossible at ego-loss
those are egotistical adventures


or take a young woman
extremely beautiful
all the guys want her
she dresses sexy with make-up in her hot teen-age body
she's kind of a slut because of the way she was brought up
she loves to dance and look in the mirror at herself

she does the lsd and sees something so amazing, that reality is so much bigger than her, and that she is actually bigger than she'd previously suspected
so she goes to the mirror, but only to find an ugly mask there
covering the true magic honest wholesome beauty beneath
the way she lies to herself, and she lets others blow smoke up her butt, it's killing her spirit.

the ego is a safer state of mind for those who have little experience with ego loss.
it takes practice

her boyfriend says "but i like it when you wear make-up"
"and put on that mini skirt tonight"

Ego loss is basically just a matter of Extreme Honesty.
Losing your own stupid personal opinions about things, and how everything applies to you, and looking outward and just absorbing things without pretention.

on lsd, if you take enough of it,
you're mind is too busy to really think about it self
your conscious center is the exact same conscious center of God, so just let him view though your eyes, and that is seeing without ego.
you will never notice magic or miracles if you can't be wholesome, innocent and free from ego.
Ego is you lying to yourself

Like this-
If you think you are cool, you are a liar and an egotist.
If you KNOW you are cool, it is for one reason only, because you have experienced ego loss, and you understand it's functions.

Usually when a person begins to dissolve the ego on a regular basis, the things they enjoy become more grand- what this means is.
the music you like
the movies you like
the clothes you like
the cars you like
whatever you like
it's all your silly opinion about nothing

but...
let's say you watch movies and listen to music and stuff while you are in a state of egolessness.
some things will send very powerful signals to your mind now, because you're viewing it free from judgement, just innocently submerged in it.
and you will either find it false and disturbing
or you will find it incredible miraculously beautiful

now then
when you "like" certain movies, or "love" certain music
it's not your opinion at all
it's not your ego
it's a fact that these movies or music are actually "better" than some silly stuff you use to think was cool.
because there are definate signals moving through certain things.
art, or people, or what have you.

if you cannot dissolve your ego
you're wasting your whole life
you are a servant in a trap that you can't even see
a person who cannot dissolve their ego is dangerous to himself and others

I think I'm repeating what other people have said, but the simplest way I can put it would be to say that you forget who you are. "You" becomes an abstract concept that you can't even conceive of during that time. In fact, your ability to even think can be totally shrunk down or even suspended altogether.
I personally enjoy it, but it can freak many people out--particularly if they aren't prepared to dissolve.

I've never had true egoloss but I've always thought of it as the loss of the sense of self or running on auto pilot but I could be wrong cause I have not been there
