Why ego "loss"?
    #4948992 -

I think ego misplacement more accurately describes what ego loss is... Who here (on Earth) is without an ego?

No one loses their ego... they just misplace it or batter it down until it is almost nothing. Then they either find it or start again with what's left of the one they were used to.

Say on a rare occasion, one loses their ego completely, they will only start over again with a new one.

Do you see it differently?

the idea is not to let go of it completely but to use it instead of it using you. if that makes any sense.

Personally, I think you're being closed-minded.

because I don't think ego "loss" is the best term for it?

Or because of something else I said?

By the way, I started this thread because I hear people talk about ego loss as if since they went through it once or twice, they are now egoless.

I don't know if anyone on this forum thinks that way.

But my point is that it is only a temporary ego loss when you go through it on drugs, and it doesn't make a difference if you have lost it or not, it's in what you do with the experience in your own life.

I'm still trying to decide if I've expierenced ego loss or not. Many people seem to describe it as a scary/terrifying expierence.

Some times, I /think/ I've had it - no concept of self,no concept of time or place - just pure energy , connected to everything in the universe.

I found it to be a very fearless, blissfull and euphoric expirence, while when I hear others describe their ego loss - they seem to do so in a way that it sounds like it scared them going into it.

..then, part of me thinks "if I even have to ask the question, - have I had an ego loss? - " then I havnt had one.

Yah i've had ego loss it is freaken cool as hell.  You just feel like you are part of the wind, thats blowing around you.  Part of the sky when you look at it.  A blade of grass or millions.  It is hard to explain but I have done lots of acid.  It is harder to do on shrooms because the trip is usually really intense.  Acid is more relaxing existential and cosmic to me; instead of just being thrown into an electrifying trip- it is more progessive and deeper.
Never felt that way with shrooms but I think shrooms are way scarier-  so ego loss would be too intense for me.  Too bad LSD is so rare :frown:

Ego is the mental construct of the self and losing it (or disolving it) leaves one with pure awareness and no context for it (no way to relate to previous experience if all that exists is the moment).

Loss is just a term, don't get bogged down in the language used to describe an experience that by it's very nature eludes explanation in an normal context.

Of the two times I (think) I've felt ego loss was.

- having my body ripped to shreds and shot across the universe in a beam of pure energy (strong mushroom trip), during the trip : concept of time, self, location, body ceased to exist for a long time.

and once on LSD - very briefly, but looking over my ramblings and writings after the expercince

- "felt as if my body was strung across a harp and plucked apart to play the soundtrack to the birth of the cosmos"

(my after-interpertations of the expierence, which dont even come close to the expierence itself)

after that happened, I could of just sat there and cried it was so wonderfull.

for you ceethru

all im saying is... well i dont think that after the experience i am now egoless... but i was, momentarily, without self...

and as for it being scary, i didnt think so, i could see why though,
imagine if you can not existing...
becoming one with the all that is existence...
there is no more you, no more him, no more her, no more house, no more tree, just ONE
i know that sounds insane but considering the circumstance....
i thought it was fascinating, i came back into my body and found myself in tears...

but i was definitly a changed man after this happened...
but ego still exists

Yes I understand this, which is why it confused me as to how people consider themselves egoless, having experienced ego loss once or twice. This thread doesn't have anything to do with definitions of ego loss, but more that going through ego loss is something different than stripping you of your ego for good. If that is how someone interprets it than I don't understand how they are integrating ego loss into their life in a logical way.

EDIT
Or at least explaining it in an accurate way.

thats odd...
i dont know that ive ever heard anyone hear say anyhting like that,
i mean, an ego is a part of our beings, so long as we are in this vehicle its not going anywhere, IMHO

Ego Disolution is a better word for it, but loss still applies... in that moment I have LOST the ego and simply am. After the fact I reintergrate with it and try to relate the experience to others.

Same goes for splitting the ego or displacing the ego (ever watched a movie and gotten so involved that you've BECOME the movie?).
