Kind of like when you are in a crowd and you hear the buzz of the crowd, but if you listen, you can pick out individual converstaions.

hearing without listening can be useful as well. when i was younger, i had a great ability to zone just about anyone out. lately, i have problems keeping focus with lots of talking going on (especially when I'm trying to read my book and the damn teacher keeps lecturing.. heh).

the bad thing is losing the ability to listen despite hearing constantly.

(BTW: I kind of also think this is a factor, in why "Jesus" could heal the blind, and cure the deaf, etc..)
