Is Sky Island Legally Possible?

I posted this is the pub and in the psychedelic experience I would now like to know the legal aspect of it....
This is just a crazy idea I had

A small town in the middle of the Atlantic raised 300 feet above sea level with beautiful lush scenery and the most friendly ppl on earth and most importantly no rules! there are no rules on Sky Island as long as it doesn't affect someones safety.....Do certain countries own the waters? could I legally start sky island? Would we be prosecuted for breaking laws of countries over waters?

Yes, yes there are. Those laws aren't exactly enforced strictly though. No country is going to want to waste their money to send a police force way out onto a remote island to apprehend someone who isn't doing any harm inside of their country.

There's a significant chance that nobody would give a shit.

there are rules governing international waters, international law
pertaining to drugs everything is still illegal, though unless u were manufacturing and exporting i doubt anyone would bother you.

I would recommend buying a few .50 caliber machine guns and setting up pillboxes in a couple locations on the island. Have a sniper or two as well. At least one of them should have a barett.

The best defense is the one that does the most damage.

I think it would take a large corporation to successfully set up a new state.

Basically, unless other states choose to recognise you as a state, you're nothing. You're just a bunch of people living on the ocean until the nearest army chooses to come and annex your island.

To successfully create recognised state, you would need, I would imagine (in addition to an unclaimed island in international waters):

a sizeable permanent population (probably more than 100 people)

a reasonably well-armed militia (not large enough to actually defend your island from attack by a foreign army, but large enough to make such an attack unpopular by gaurenteeing some casualties)

a well-organised government and civil service (although they could be very small, they would have to exist)

a body of law (possibly a constitution)

a diplomatic service

and finally, an incentive for other states to recognise you as a state (this is the hard part)

if a large corporation tried to establish a state on a man-made island in international waters, I imagine it could meet these criteria fairly easily. It would also have the lobbying power to encourage foreign governments to recognise it.

Alternatively, once you had a permanent population, if you gained sufficient media coverage, that might be enough to make a foreign country annexing your island politically unpopular.

Another option might be to set up your island as a corporate tax haven or a safe banking haven to the extent that your island became economically significant, and then use the lobbying power of the resident businesses to lobby for recognition from foreign governments

or alternatively, exploit your economic power by offering some kind of favourable trading agreement with a foreign power in exchange for becoming a protectorate
