Vermiculite substitute?
    #5452765 - 03/28/06 07:54 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

So I just went over to Home Depot to pick up the rest of my materials and the man told me they stopped selling vermiculite a long time ago because the company stopped making it. He pointed me over to some Peat Moss, which retains moisture, and perlite, which I've seen used for fruiting portion of growth but he described it as having the same basic properties as vermiculite. So I bought both of these, I knew I'd be able to use the perlite later anyways and the Peat Moss was only a couple bucks, but I was wondering if either of these would function as a substitute for vermiculite. And if not, where could I pick some up? Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure about peat moss, but I buy my verm. from a little garden center, try to find a place that deals with only garden supplies.

They sell vermiculite at Canadien Tire, although, I dont know whether it is the "ideal" brand. Seems to be medium fine grade, which is what is reccomended in various Teks if my memory serves me correctly. They also said too fine of verm is less innoculable (is that a word??)...Keep hunting, there are so many stores out there with so many nifty products that accomidate this hobby, thankfully enough.

Good Luck

I bought vermiculite off mediummania's ebay...Was waiting for it to ship (btw got it in a week overall, so maybe he did fix his shit) and then I had to go to Lowe's and guess what I saw there? Yes 9qt bag of Horticultural grade vermiculite. Check your nearest lowe's.

To answer your question, perlite is NOT a substitute for vermiculite and cannot be used as a casing layer. Sphagnum peat moss is usually mixed with vermiculite [look up the 50/50 casing tek] and with hydrated lime [look up the 50/50+ casing tek].

This thread has been closed.

Reason:
It's extremely important for new growers to study and learn all they can. You can't ask questions about each and every thing, when they're already answered in the first 10 pages of threads.

Read, read, and then read some more. Look what was posted TODAY, that you would see if you read past the first page: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6627012#Post6627012

And, from 4 days ago: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6610766#Post6610766

Both of these would come up using the search feature and the word 'vermiculite'. Good luck to you, but please do your homework before posting questions. This isn't to you personally, but to everyone. The boards are getting horribly cluttered with people coming in and asking the exact same questions over and over again because they can't take two hours and read back fifty pages of posts, in which case, nearly every single question they have would be answered.
