Does anything exist that you can use as a substitute for Vermiculite?

verm is not for sale in some states and some only supply it seasonally. There's no substiture, good luck finding some. If all else fails, order it online, pay the money to get the right stuff.

Yea, I assumed I'd end up having to find it somehow, but I'd heard of something like permulite or perlite or something and the store clerk said they were similar; so, I figured I'd ask to be sure.

They are not similar at all. That store clerk should get smacked with a smart stick.

well, for most purposes, perlite would probably substitute vermiculite without too many problems. Porous additive for soil would satisfy most gardeners (I think, living in a downtown apartment doesn't improve my green thumb).

Only difference that I know for sure is that perlite wicks water away, while vermiculite absorbs and holds water to be used by the myc network.

Well, if that's the only difference, should I be able to use perlite if I keep it watered?

watered? read the TEKs, vermiculite is required for it's properties. adding water would be nearly impossible and just asking for contaminants. Perlite wicks water, that's why it is used to add humidity. The water is wicked from the moist part, to the dry part and into the air. Do you want water wicked away from your substrate?

:mushroom2:  I've tried to use perlite in a casing soil and it SUCKS THE LONG ONE!!!  Not only does it contam, it turns your casing soil into a chunk of cement.  That clerk needs to either be re-trained or they need to find another line of work.  :mushroom2:

for plants they are almost a swapable item, perlite provides a little more drainage than vermiculite

with mushrooms, you cannot swap one for the other

I've actually made calls to all floral, lawn/garden and convenient store within about a 30 mi. radius. The only place that I found that sells it does so only in the spring time. So, I guess I'm S.O.L. until I find about $10 to buy some. I mean, if I had a convenient store near-by, I could get some for free. . . *cries*
And, btw, thanks for informing me about the difference. I've never grown mushrooms before, so I don't know much, just the basics and what I've read so far.

Oh, and I know that this is a question that will strike people as odd, but being that there is no way (save the internet) for me to attain vermiculite near-by, would it be possible for anyone (who has a bulk amount of it) to perhaps send enough my way for maybe a few rice cakes? Not to sound like a begger, but I really could use any freebie-help I could get at the moment. Sorry if I come off the wrong way by asking this, but I figured it would be worth the shot.
