The Difference Between Vermiculite & Perlite w/pics 1

You can see that perlite is crystalline and impervious to water, but with a large surface area to hold and evaporate it off from.
Vermiculite is soft and resembles a mineral sponge, able to soak up water and hold it. Vermiculite also has lots of passageways the mycelium can colonize while absorbing the moisture within.
Hopefully, these pictures will put to rest the idea of substituting one for the other. They're not even remotely similar. RR

So are you saying one is clearly superior to the other or are they just best fit for different tasks.

The latter. Perlite is for humidifying terrariums and/or adding air and fluff to casing layers, and vermiculite is for holding water as a reservoir and releasing it to the mycelium as needed. Verm is used in pf cakes and casing recipes. It will also provide fluff and a rez effect(reservoir) in manure and compost mixes. A bit of perlite can also be added to casings, but then, it's to provide fresh air pockets that are conducive to hyphal knot formation. RR

I hope everyone sees this thread, everyone is always asking if they can substitute one for the other,I don't know why people even get this idea into their heads but its good to actually see pictures of the difference

Agreed, but the biggest problem is many posters never read or search the threads, but simply post their questions. I worded the thread title to show on the search feature if anybody searches for those two keywords. We'll see how long it takes for the next 'can I substitute one for the other' thread to pop up. RR

Newbies are always asking if they can substitute one for the other...
so we will probably see another another thread within a week or so.
Along with the "where can I buy Vermiculite and Coco Coir?"...
which seems to be on a daily basis.
and sometimes several threads on the same day...
on the 1st page...
because they don't bother to read anything before posting!~

I know perlite can't substitute vermiculite, but could it still be used in a casing mix? Would it harm the mycelium? I have a potting mix made from about everything that mushies need, but it also contains perlite. (Sphagnum peat moss, perlite, vermiculite, composted manure, wetting agent, starter nutrients, calcium enriched.)
I've been wondering if I could use it as a casing layer to case my pf cakes, so if anyone can answer me...
Thanks!

They will always ask the question, In fact im guilty of it, Im not ignorant, But most dial uppers, WHen using the search engine,, wait 20 mins.. Mine does!. But this is great, clear and good pics, will help many. Since perlite gives places for air, My thout is it, if used correctly can increase R.H, and possibly make fae less nescisarry, since there is more room for it., Just an opinion. But yes.. Both good for different uses. I have perlite,, but need vermic!!!.. Good thing the stores in stock soon!> good job RR

By the way, the perlite and vermiculte pictured in this thread were very small pieces, as you can see from the comparison to the lettering on the dime. I had fine verm, so had to dig through the perlite to find a piece small enough to match, or I wouldn't have been able to get them both in focus at the same time. I'll get a picture of a larger piece later. They're really spectacular to look at. The camera just doesn't do them justice compared to the way they look through the binocular lenses of the microscope.
I just thought they made it very clear why we use one to evaporate moisture, and the other to store moisture. It allows you to make a more informed answer when someone asks this question later. RR

It would probably be easier in that case to take an hour or two, and read back fifty pages of threads. Things get repeated enough that you should be able to get a wealth of information that way.
It would also help tremendously if posters would use thumbnail images like you see above, instead of linking to the full sized image when they post pictures. I can imagine how long it takes to open some of these huge files with dialup, and they have to be downloaded each time you look at the thread. RR
