Rye Spawn

Yeah, i use 1.5cup/1.5cup water/rye grain in 1 1/2 quart jars with poly fill filter floss filters fitted on them. The problem is, the rye grain is drying out. Is this normal for the spawn to dry out before it is colonized? or am i not using enough water. i'm inoculating from selected agar squares.

Don't leave the jars too close to a heatsource if you're using one. Peace, MAIA

I had the same problem because I use a space heater to warm my incubation chamber. Solution, raise the humidity of your incubation chamber and you will not have a drying out problem anymore.

The way I finally got rye to work for me is to boil the rye till about 2% of the kurnels pop and then strain good. Then fill the bottom of the jar with dry vermiculite about 1/2 in to 3/4 (depending on if you are using pints or quarts). Then add strained rye and cover let sit overnight to let endospores germinate then sterilize.

Good idea! how do you propose i raise humidity, without buying another humidifier? I currently use a fish tank bubbler to airate my tap water (gets rid of chlorine) before i use it. i wonder if myabe letting the 20l pail bubble in the incubator would work? i use a space heater too man. its a liquid heated unit that doesnt have any red coil exposed, but it still pumps heat. it keeps my incub at 29 for a joke. the humidity is currently around 30 in there.

I would use coco fiber under the cakes cause it seems to hold more water. If your temps arent warm enough the water wont evaporate at fast enough rate to provide high humidity. I would set the cakes directly on your coco fiber or vermiculite. If your using a tub or aquarium I would put a heating pad underneath and turn it on low 1 hour to times a day which will bring the humidity up. If its still not humid enough turn it on more times a day. Also I would limit venting to once a day so you dont loose the humidity. I only vent once a day and never had any problems with CO2 build up. But if your using casings the substrate and coco fiber provide enough humidity with with the domes on. Also every time you kick your light on it should raise the humidity.
