Log of my first time using rye spawn (NEW PICS)
    #403020 - 09/24/01 09:03 PM (23 years, 24 days ago)

Well, after two years I have moved away from cakes and have started to dable with rye spawn. This is what I did..

I used a fully colonized jar of organic rye grain. Colonized by The Mighty Ausralian cube!

I added one cup of H2O to each then Sterilized 750ml. of Genisis Organic Compost and 750 ml. of Canadiian Cow manure in the p/c for 90 minutes in a 1 liter jar.

Using the Oven Tek, I spread the jar of colonized rye over the bottom of my tray. Then added the compost and mixed it in with the rye using my hands (while wearing sterile surgical gloves). Once mixed well I added the manure and spread it even without mixing. I them used a "Saran Quick Cover" to cover the container and for the past three days has been in total darkness at room temp.
A few minutes ago I took a peek and you can see there is already growth.

My question is this, should I leave the tray in darkness for a few more days, until further colonization occurs or move it to the grow chamber now? Thank-you for your time and I look forward to your response.

Cheers,

I'd wait till its about 30% colonized then put it in the light and grow enviroment

If you ask me, you should spawn the manure with the rye and cover with compost, not the other way round.

At a local garden center. Most would have it and I would bet even the home depot garden center would have it. I paid $2.00 each for two HUGE bags.

Today is day 5 since I started the dung tray and things continue to progress. The dung continues to colonize and is at about 10%. No contams (yet) and the casing looks moist and healthy.
Using the saran qucik covers is great. They are easy to put on and are not half the pain in the ass saran wrap is.
Anyway, I will post some new pics tommorow.

Anyone who has experience with casing and has any tips for me a would appreciate it. Thanks for your time..

I've never seen saran quick wraps before(at wal-mart) how long have they been out and where did you find them? Where did you buy the rye? Thanx

I got the quick wraps at the grocery store (with the saranwrap and aluminium foil) and they have been out for a few months.
The rye I had to look around for and after calling about 10 health food stores I found one that sells it be the 25 lb. bag. 100% organic rye , $10.00.

DAY SIX:
Thought I would update everyone on my progress. Knock on wood...I have had NO contams and the layered compost/rye spawn and cow dung is colonizing fast! I am very pleased, I will be following the advice given here (place in terarium once 30% colonized) and will be puttng it in my grow chamber in the morning.

I am so pleased, but I am trying not to celebrate prematurly. I will update again in two days wish me luck and feel free to post any tips, hints or thoughts.

DAY 8:

I placed the tray in the terrarium yesterday morning and this morning the veg. growth continues to spread.

I added a H2O2 bubbler set-up to all of my terrariums a few days ago and so I am hoping that will give me a leg up. So far, it has worked great at keeping huidity high, contams low and O2 levels high as well!

This is only the second day since I moved the tray to the terrarium, so I don't expect any pins for at least another 3-5 days. Still no contams and it looks healthy and strong. I will update again in a few days.
*Thnaks to all of you that have given your thoughts and guidence and I hope I can be of assistance to you.

you ever worry that youre shrooms might grow to big for that terrarium??? that thing should be pinning like crazy soon!!! are you still using perlite for humidification??? take it easy on yourself!!! get a self automated setup going (self automated except for when you want to check them out and/or pick the shrooms ; P ) and what are all those air hoses going too??? give it a few cycles and youre setup will be completely different and youre shrooms will grow better than ever!!!!

it begins with an "m" and ends with an "ushroom"

get youre equipment from here!!!

I have recently added H2O2 bubblers to the setup to decrease time demands and it has made a world of difference. I continue to use perlite as well, but the addition of the bubblers is wonderfulll... just peek, pick and walk away!
(I do miss all of the 1:1 with my babies though....)

DAY TEN:

The tray has been in the terrarium for 4 days now and veg. growth continues, but has slowed. I can now see pre-pins (can't remember what they are called...the little white bumps...anyway) and they are increasing in number. I expect pins to form in 24-48 hours! This is a very exciting time.

Still no contams, just a clean , sheet of white! Wish me luck and if you have any advice feel free to share.

P.S- If you have not, please make a donation to Thor to help keep the shroomery running. Without our help, the shroomery will be gone.

Neither, it is cow dung mixed with organic compost. It was an accident, but seems to be working well.

My temp. is 72 degres and humidity is 90-95%.

DAY TWELVE:

I have hundreds of pins!!! I do mean hundreds of them and I am so happy, I could almost cry. Take a look at why I am bursting with pride...

I think I must be lucky, but I guess experience does count for somthing...right? If all goes well I should have full sized, dung grown shrooms within 24-48 hours. I will now update every day, as I am very excited and want to share this with all of you. Wish me luck and as always, your thoughs are welcome and apprciated.

Yes, 24 hours a day....every day and what a difference it makes. I am a guy who has always used perlite and nothing else, but I would recomend it to everyone.
My fruits are bigger, and thicker and they all look stronger. It is a bit , of cash to dish out , but well worth the time and effort.

DAY FOURTEEN:

The pins are growing and increasing in number. No contams and they look great. I think that my 24-48 hour estimate of having full grown 'shrooms was a little off, but no matter, they are growing and will be full grown soon.
As usual, here are the latest pics...

Just look at all of those pins!

It is now that I understand why so many people have been asking me to try casing over the years. I guess I just did not want ot give up the cakes...well, bye bye, CAKES!

I will update again tommorow...

Yes...as a popular commercial says " I AM CANADIAN", but I don't drink it. I am proud to be Canadian and even prouder of how our country has vowed to help the USA in stopping international terrorism. Sorry 'bout the rambling..

But, yes I am Canadian

DAY SIXTEEN:

Well what can I say...I have full grown mushrooms, but I am not very happy with the results.

The fruits are small, thin and few. The amount I got from the first flush here, is about the same (dry wieght) I would get from 3 cakes and with cakes they were big and thick. I am using the same strain (Aussie) that I used with the cakes.

I think the problem is water! I mixed the rye spawn with organic compost and cased with dung. I don't think doing this gave it enough water and that could explain the smaller fruits.

To remedy this, I have purchased a few bricks of coir (coco fiber) and will use this as the casing. For my next try I will mix the rye spawn with a 50/50 mix of dung/compost and case using the coir. I would love to hear from those that have used it before.
How do you prepare it? (soak in H2O overnight, then drain prior to caxing?)
Do you need to p/c it?

Thanks again for your time and I look forward to ALL comments and suggestions.

Man, i have been trying this casing thing for the past a lot of months.... and all my shit always gets taken in by contam.... would you mind telling me what type of casing substrate you used... it looks to me like a peat/verm mix....how long did you sterlilize your casing substrate for? Whrere did you get the stuff for it... i have been using this walmart shit, but it always seems to get contamed.... any help is much obliged... as i am gettting very frustrated with all of this.... i wish there was an easier way to plop down quart jar rye cakes, but they wont come out of the jar without fucking them all up.

Shroomz, the other shit... one of the reasons George Clinton sees the Mothership.
Oh yea, this is all just a figment of your imagination. Opinionately speaking of course....

using coco coir is very simple and very effective..
to use it simply break a big chunk from the brick, consider an increase in volume of 5-6 times when adding water.
i suggest you to add boiling water to the chunk, to minimize contams.
normally sterilizing is not needed, but btw is very depending from enviromental factors.....
just add an inch of coco coir (well wet but not dripping) to your substrate, and tru to keep it irregular, with "mountains and valleys", yeld will be increased..

Thanks for the info!

Are you saying that I should or should not have the coir flat/even to increase yields? Thanks again for your time and effort..

Paulishminob

I did not use peat or verm....I mixed the rye spawn with compost and csed with dung. *Do not try this, it sucks* That is why I am going to case using the coir...

I got the dung and organic compost at a local garden center and p/c both for 90 minutes.

I hope this was of help. Just to let you know, all of the quetions you asked are answered in previous posts in this thread, so read it through and it should give you a complete look at the process.
Thanks for your interest...

Did you supply additional water to your upper layer throug spraying the suface with water? This should be done, so the surface remailns quite moist in the last phase of the growth.

All in all I don?t consider it to be a bad flush. The mushrooms are very uniform and they are many and as far I was able to see, also there weren?t any aborts.
