Log of my first time using rye spawn (NEW PICS)
#403020 - 09/24/01 09:03 PM (23 years, 2 months ago) |

Well, after two years I have moved away from cakes and have started to dable with rye spawn. This is what I did..
I used a fully colonized jar of organic rye grain. Colonized by The Mighty Ausralian cube!
I added one cup of H2O to each then Sterilized 750ml. of Genisis Organic Compost and 750 ml. of Canadiian Cow manure in the p/c for 90 minutes in a 1 liter jar.
Using the Oven Tek, I spread the jar of colonized rye over the bottom of my tray. Then added the compost and mixed it in with the rye using my hands (while wearing sterile surgical gloves). Once mixed well I added the manure and spread it even without mixing. I them used a "Saran Quick Cover" to cover the container and for the past three days has been in total darkness at room temp.
A few minutes ago I took a peek and you can see there is already growth.
My question is this, should I leave the tray in darkness for a few more days, until further colonization occurs or move it to the grow chamber now? Thank-you for your time and I look forward to your response.
Cheers,

I'd wait till its about 30% colonized then put it in the light and grow enviroment

If you ask me, you should spawn the manure with the rye and cover with compost, not the other way round.

At a local garden center. Most would have it and I would bet even the home depot garden center would have it. I paid $2.00 each for two HUGE bags.

Today is day 5 since I started the dung tray and things continue to progress. The dung continues to colonize and is at about 10%. No contams (yet) and the casing looks moist and healthy.
Using the saran qucik covers is great. They are easy to put on and are not half the pain in the ass saran wrap is.
Anyway, I will post some new pics tommorow.
Anyone who has experience with casing and has any tips for me a would appreciate it. Thanks for your time..

I got the quick wraps at the grocery store (with the saranwrap and aluminium foil) and they have been out for a few months.
The rye I had to look around for and after calling about 10 health food stores I found one that sells it be the 25 lb. bag. 100% organic rye , $10.00.

DAY SIX:
Thought I would update everyone on my progress. Knock on wood...I have had NO contams and the layered compost/rye spawn and cow dung is colonizing fast! I am very pleased, I will be following the advice given here (place in terarium once 30% colonized) and will be puttng it in my grow chamber in the morning.
I am so pleased, but I am trying not to celebrate prematurly. I will update again in two days wish me luck and feel free to post any tips, hints or thoughts.

DAY 8:
I placed the tray in the terrarium yesterday morning and this morning the veg. growth continues to spread.
I added a H2O2 bubbler set-up to all of my terrariums a few days ago and so I am hoping that will give me a leg up. So far, it has worked great at keeping huidity high, contams low and O2 levels high as well!
This is only the second day since I moved the tray to the terrarium, so I don't expect any pins for at least another 3-5 days. Still no contams and it looks healthy and strong. I will update again in a few days.
*Thnaks to all of you that have given your thoughts and guidence and I hope I can be of assistance to you.

you ever worry that youre shrooms might grow to big for that terrarium??? that thing should be pinning like crazy soon!!! are you still using perlite for humidification??? take it easy on yourself!!! get a self automated setup going (self automated except for when you want to check them out and/or pick the shrooms ; P ) and what are all those air hoses going too??? give it a few cycles and youre setup will be completely different and youre shrooms will grow better than ever!!!!
it begins with an "m" and ends with an "ushroom"
get youre equipment from here!!!

I have recently added H2O2 bubblers to the setup to decrease time demands and it has made a world of difference. I continue to use perlite as well, but the addition of the bubblers is wonderfulll... just peek, pick and walk away!
(I do miss all of the 1:1 with my babies though....)

DAY TEN:
The tray has been in the terrarium for 4 days now and veg. growth continues, but has slowed. I can now see pre-pins (can't remember what they are called...the little white bumps...anyway) and they are increasing in number. I expect pins to form in 24-48 hours! This is a very exciting time.
Still no contams, just a clean , sheet of white! Wish me luck and if you have any advice feel free to share.
P.S- If you have not, please make a donation to Thor to help keep the shroomery running. Without our help, the shroomery will be gone.
