Yes. The initial colonized rye grain is called a "grain master". You will want to fully colonize the grain master first and then add the grain master rye to the secondary bags...about 20% grain master and 80 uncolonized substrate. In this scenerio you would make 5 bags for every 1 master. You could add more or less, but the 20/80 relationship has always worked great for me!!! would the bags have to be very sterile as well? Or is it that since the new grain isn't being colonized by spores sterility isn't too important? This really interests me, I bought a bunch of those bags from FP that have the filter patch on them, then i learned that i would need some exspensive impulse sealer to use them :tongue: If i could seal those, maybe i wouldn't even need to sterilize the grain in the jars...too much work :smile:

You should be able to use zip locks. Just buy a new pack. Take the bags out and put them in your glove box (hope you have one) and then wipe them down with isopropryl alcohol and let dry. These should be pretty sterile now.

Great! That's what I use too! Soak your rye grain overnight in mineral water. Then cook the rye grain at a low boil for 1 hour in the same water. Strain very well. Place 4 to 6 quarts of cooked grain into the spawn bags. Add 10 t 12 grams of powdered gypsum (Calcium Sulfate) to the bag and gently roll the mixture. Draw up bag's opening like when closing a bread bag. Loosely close bag with twist tie. Place in pressure cooker. Sterilize at 15 psi for 1.5 hours. Once sterilized twist bag's opening tightly and fold over...secure with twist tie (do this immediately after sterilization). Do not squeeze bag. Let cool. Inject syringe water through gausetted filter (near it's edge). Cover needle puncture with sticker or tape. Don't cover porous area of patch. Roll grain to distribute grain and spore water. Place in controled environment at 86 degrees. Roll grain every 4 days. If dealing with a substrain like B+ or EQs...full colonization in 9 to 12 days. Good luck.

I need to move on to new substrates this just sounds way to fun to stay w/ this weak ver./rice, I want more experience now!!!! God give me strength to endure this ignorance of beginning, it will pass... :smile:

Schroom Mage: Do you think the cooking and sterilizing steps could be combined into an appropriate time in a microwave oven? I was thinking of taking the soaked and drained rye,and putting 6-8qts in a filter bag. This would be placed in a microwave and cooked/sterilized for ~20min.
