Neither, it is cow dung mixed with organic compost. It was an accident, but seems to be working well. My temp. is 72 degres and humidity is 90-95%.

DAY TWELVE: I have hundreds of pins!!! I do mean hundreds of them and I am so happy, I could almost cry. Take a look at why I am bursting with pride...

I think I must be lucky, but I guess experience does count for somthing...right? If all goes well I should have full sized, dung grown shrooms within 24-48 hours. I will now update every day, as I am very excited and want to share this with all of you. Wish me luck and as always, your thoughs are welcome and apprciated.

Yes, 24 hours a day....every day and what a difference it makes. I am a guy who has always used perlite and nothing else, but I would recomend it to everyone. My fruits are bigger, and thicker and they all look stronger. It is a bit , of cash to dish out , but well worth the time and effort.

DAY FOURTEEN: The pins are growing and increasing in number. No contams and they look great. I think that my 24-48 hour estimate of having full grown 'shrooms was a little off, but no matter, they are growing and will be full grown soon. As usual, here are the latest pics...

Just look at all of those pins! It is now that I understand why so many people have been asking me to try casing over the years. I guess I just did not want ot give up the cakes...well, bye bye, CAKES! I will update again tommorow...

DAY SIXTEEN: Well what can I say...I have full grown mushrooms, but I am not very happy with the results.
The fruits are small, thin and few. The amount I got from the first flush here, is about the same (dry wieght) I would get from 3 cakes and with cakes they were big and thick. I am using the same strain (Aussie) that I used with the cakes. I think the problem is water! I mixed the rye spawn with organic compost and cased with dung. I don't think doing this gave it enough water and that could explain the smaller fruits. To remedy this, I have purchased a few bricks of coir (coco fiber) and will use this as the casing. For my next try I will mix the rye spawn with a 50/50 mix of dung/compost and case using the coir. I would love to hear from those that have used it before. How do you prepare it? (soak in H2O overnight, then drain prior to caxing?) Do you need to p/c it? Thanks again for your time and I look forward to ALL comments and suggestions.

Man, i have been trying this casing thing for the past a lot of months.... and all my shit always gets taken in by contam.... would you mind telling me what type of casing substrate you used... it looks to me like a peat/verm mix....how long did you sterlilize your casing substrate for? Whrere did you get the stuff for it... i have been using this walmart shit, but it always seems to get contamed.... any help is much obliged... as i am gettting very frustrated with all of this.... i wish there was an easier way to plop down quart jar rye cakes, but they wont come out of the jar without fucking them all up.
Shroomz, the other shit... one of the reasons George Clinton sees the Mothership. Oh yea, this is all just a figment of your imagination. Opinionately speaking of course....

using coco coir is very simple and very effective.. to use it simply break a big chunk from the brick, consider an increase in volume of 5-6 times when adding water. i suggest you to add boiling water to the chunk, to minimize contams. normally sterilizing is not needed, but btw is very depending from enviromental factors..... just add an inch of coco coir (well wet but not dripping) to your substrate, and tru to keep it irregular, with "mountains and valleys", yeld will be increased..

Thanks for the info! "just add an inch of coco coir (well wet but not dripping) to your substrate, and tru to keep it irregular, with "mountains and valleys", yeld will be increased.. " Are you saying that I should or should not have the coir flat/even to increase yields? Thanks again for your time and effort..

Paulishminob I did not use peat or verm....I mixed the rye spawn with compost and csed with dung. *Do not try this, it sucks* That is why I am going to case using the coir... I got the dung and organic compost at a local garden center and p/c both for 90 minutes. I hope this was of help. Just to let you know, all of the quetions you asked are answered in previous posts in this thread, so read it through and it should give you a complete look at the process. Thanks for your interest...
