baking spawn bags
    #447558 - 11/05/01 09:57 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

How's it going everybody. Some of you may or may not remember me (I used to come here often), anyway I had to make a slight alteration in my name (_ ) to get back on. Anyway, I have FP spawn bags and a eurosealer. Though this is the first time I've used bags, I'm feel comfortable w/ all the procedures, but my pressure cooker is too small, plus it's broke :( What I want to know is if anybody has had any success with baking these bags instead of PC'ing

If so, with what procedure? (steeping first then baking or throwing in dry grain and water then baking for X minutes)

BTW does water escape from the filter patch on the spawn bags?

Thanks I know kinda long, Any replies welcome

PS I want to use finch seed but will use anything if someone has a success method

I think you have fair chances that they will melt.

Baking wet grain isn't going to raise it's temp higher than boiling, unless it boils dry which defeats the object. It is the pressure in the PC that allows the water to reach a higher temp.

It's not like basic PCs are that expensive, especially from
charity shops and boot fairs.

Don't the spawn bags withstand a min. temp of approximately 250 deg. F? They should handle this much heat if not more. Do you know for sure the max temp. to handle these bags in?

Thank you ndk, but I know this.
If you ever saw a spawn bag, you will see that only app. half of it is filled with the wet substrate. The other half is empty.
It?s this half that will heat up more than the boiling point of water and possibly(I?d say most likely) melt. Mmkay?

NDK-

I've thought about how the water won't get higher than 212 but what's important is that the bacteria gets higher than 212 ( I don't know how the water temp. relation to the bacteria temp, but I think they are independent of each other) thanks for the reply and reply back to correct me if necessary

any other replies are also welcome

Anno-

I plan on standing them up so the steam should rise to fill the whole thing up plus If I set the oven temp. to say 260, there is no way the temp will get high enough to melt, right? I'm open to suggestion, but want to be well informed (not tryin' to argue)

The Vicat softening point of PP is approximately 150 C (302 F).
The Vicat softening temperature is the temperature at which a flat-ended needle penetrates the specimen to the depth of 1 mm under a specific load. The temperature reflects the point of softening to be expected when a material is used in an elevated temperature application.

Anno: No need to thank me ;-) I was actually answering the original poster. I was saying that baking won't work for the reasons stated. I'm sure you are correct the some of the bag will melt depending on the oven temp.

Highbeems: the entire mixture will absorb heat, when the whole thing reaches over 100C, the water will boil off. Before that most of the grain will be surrounded by water which will prevent it reaching a higher temp. Only after most of the water has gone will it get hotter. Then it will start to toast! There are not many ways of getting a wet substance over 100C without using pressure.

Thanks Anno, very helpful. Does anybody think that BRF/Ver. would work much better in case the the whole "bacteria temp. gets higher than the water temp." isn't true. BRF seems very plausible to me, any suggestions?

BRF/verm will sterilise at lower temps right enough. A lot of people just boil their jars. Still wouldn't use an oven though

cool, I'll probably just use BRF then, dammit (since it not as good and harder to shake when colonizing). Hopefully I can find a pot large enough for cheap,

You wouldn't want to use BRF in the same way as you would rye. It won't shake at all, it'll form a solid mass. You'll need to use it in the PF cake manner.
