why do people use spawn bags?

i bought some spawn bags online, with a filter patch and a self-sealing injector port. cost about $1 each
normally i do grain in jars with tyvek - i'm only getting the bags for something new to try. what is the benefit? the only one i can think of is i could fit more of them in the incubator, by more efficient stacking 9allowing the patches access to air).
are there others?

I've only used them a couple o times, one advantage was that I could disturb/shake the substrate to speed up colonisation.

Spawn Bags without an injector port are significantly cheaper than those with them (only 20% of the cost). It is not the port which cost so much but all the extra steps, labor and equipment to put them on the bag. That aside spawn bags have several benefits I can think of off the top of my head, probably a few more if I try. For one the can hold more substrate than a jar. In the large size spawn bag 5 pounds of substrate will easily fit. Spawn Bags also make it easy to mix the contents to speed up colonization time. You can fold and stack filled bags in a autoclave or pressure cooker making it even more efficient to use. Spawn bags do not normally break when dropped like glass is known to do. I have cut my hand before trying to shake a jar, this is not a concern with the bags. The plastic is thinner than a glass jar and it will transfer heat or cold more readily. The bag can also be used as the fruiting container! (you can cut the bag down to make it "tray like". We even have bags that can be sealed up before if is autoclaved so when the cycle is complete you can open the vessel without worry of "dirty air" contaminating your substrate. These pre-sealable type bags are available with injection ports further decreasing contamination risks. Oh, and as mentioned by Shirley all our bags have the micro filter patch built in. Many people wash and reuse these bags and the injector ports can be punctured by a needle many times, over 25 I am sure, perhaps even over 50 times. If I think of more benifits I will post them.

i have about 50 of the bags WIHTOUT the self-healing injector thingie
i suppose u could do grain in them ... would be easier to load up one big bag rather than 10 quart jars.....
but i use em for my poop.... that way i can sterlize it..... yay!
scroll down a bit and read 6T's bit about sterlization.......

Here is what I have done, inspired by a post in the advanced forum. I took an oven bag, the kind without the little holes in it. Filled it with properly hydrated WBS, took a big wad of poly-fill and placed it into the opening of the bag (close to the WBS). The oven bags came with these little zip tie wanna be things, so that is what I used for holding the poly-fill in place. I then placed another zip tie at the top of the bag leaving about 6 inches of leftover bag. Once pressure cooked and cooled, I took a single half pint of popcorn and placed it into the little chamber I made between the zip ties. Then I closed the upper tie and removed the lower one, temporarily moving the poly-fill out of the way. The spawn was then placed in with the WBS and the poly-fill replaced and tied back into place. Then the leftover bag was cut off just above the poly-fill wad, and spawn distributed evenly. (If in any way my instructions are difficult to understand, I will be more than happy to clarify. I just ran through them quickly.) This worked very well. I did it twice and no problems; WAY more spawn was generated than I could ever fit into a jar, perhaps a gallon or so. Basically that is the advantage I see you having there, the generation of lots of spawn without using a bunch of jars... But I think the real reason why most of the ones who use bags is ease of use. They can be bought already sterilized, and can come with injector ports and filter patches. It is in human nature to use whatever takes the least amount of effort (as long as results are similar). Edit: Here is the original post. I did not spray peroxide or anything, just done open air quickly...

No, not really. It was a combination of the idea in the link, with the polyfill modification I made for air exchange. It was never my idea anyway. I don't write teks, and I don't do growlogs...
Now, I have only done this twice, but it seems far less risky than an open air transfer to a jar. It worked fine both times.

I just noticed the green there too. The image was found on a commercial grower site. The type of mushroom seen are woodears. There are some molds that are intentionally introduced like those for cheeses. I'm not sure if this edible species is one of them. Since they are commercial growers and would be out of business if they made habit of poisoning customers, I'll assume it is a harmless mold.

I was wondering there for a second, because if that was a picture of your setup, I want to move in with you. Well, except for the green meanies, they would have to move out first.

Your welcome Shirley. I try to reply when I see these kind of threads. I am sure you will enjoy them. When I first tried bags about 12 years ago I put my jars on the shelf and did not look back.

what would be the best way to seal these bags without an impulse sealer?
right now im usin loads of packing tape, but since im working in a cramped homemade/lysol glovebox, my options are limited....
what would u folks suggest? (and dont say "buy an impulse sealer" cuz i already kno that )
