I have not tried anything other than a impulse sealer so I can not offer suggestions. I know people on these boards have used other things so hopefully they will tell you what works.

Look up "laboratory supply" in your local yellow pages and ask if they have autoclavable tape. I haven't found many sources for it online, but my local supply store sells it $12 for a small roll.
I've also had success with aluminum tape. You can find that at your local Home Depot.

No more boxes of jars to store, wash, and buy new lids for. One can store thousands of bags in the space it takes to store one box of jars. Built in filter patches eliminate the time and expense of jury rigging some type of filter to the lids. Just fill em, use em, and toss em. Easy distribution of colonized grain is a great feature too. easy peasy.

Would an iron not work to seal up the bags?

yea i think an iron is the second way apart from having a sealer, but its not as easy as it sounds. i was trying to find the post where this guy uses those plastic book binders to hold his bags shut, its hard to explain what they are.
they slide down the clear plastic covers that you would put on book reports in middle school..

Those clips probably work pretty good I would think. What would be hard about using an iron?

An iron is hard as hell to use to seal a myco bag trust me I have tried. Think about putting touching a red hot iron to a piece of plastic it just shrivles and unevenly melts and seals it. IMO if you got it to work you are a master with an iron. My friend seals the very top with a lighter oh so gently and then tapes the hell out of it and it works for him.

i still think that a couple of zipties would work perfectly. afterwards you could just cut away the ziptie and still use the bag. You don't have to ruin your bag with an iron.

Instead of buying an impulse sealer fold a sheet of A4 paper over the opening of the bag then run a very hot iron over the paper and you will find that it seals the opening together. Simple and quick and a lot cheaper than an impulse sealer.
Don't forget the paper though or it will make on hell of a mess of the iron.
