Rye Spawn

I am just curious as to how many times you can dump a colonized jar of whole grain rye out into another spawn jar of whole grain rye, without the strain weakening, or is there really any limit.
Spawn jars are just so fast, compared to even agar slabs.

i was under the impression that would cause contamination. if done successfully, you should have no problems.

There is a limit

I've heard 1-3 years. Could be a few months or five years, but there is a limit. It's called sentients (senile).

The strain just gets shitty (slow growing, low fruiting, etc.)

Oh man, no contamination problems. some of my spawn is on its 3rd generation now.
I have fully colonized 1 1/2qt jars in 6-7 days from spawn.
whereas they were taking much longer with agar slabs.

The mycelium has a lot more potential than you may think. Commercial agaricus farmers typically expand some spawn 1000-10,000 times from the original quart jar or spawn master. The expanded spawn is then used to innoculate a bulk substrate. Cubes have this same potential, but if you clone the mushroom from the expanded substrate, senescense or the degeneration of the cell's DNA may kick in if you plan on expanding that tissue another 1000 times.
It's perfectly fine to expand your mycelium, but do not keep cloning the same individual if the spawn it originated from has been significantly expanded. Cells can only divide a finite number of times, but that's somewhere in the billions or trillions.

Stamets Says " Inocculations beyond third generation of transfers is not reccommended." If 10 jars are inocculated from culture, they could inocculate 100 jars, which in turn could inocculate 1,000 jars! Hope this helps.
