Problems with Humidity.........
    #791981 - 08/02/02 07:37 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

OK, i am posting this question cause i am really really stump by this whole situation.....

Another shroomy member has been helping me with this problem, and i have listened to EVERY advice he has given me...THANKS MAN.

But anywho....here is the stiuation.

there is one casing sitting inside a rubbermaid container, there is about 1/2 to 1 inch of perlite sitting on bottom with the casing pan sitting right on top of the perlite. i checked the terr. yesterday and noticed there was alot of standing water underneither the casing.....i was told this was a bad thing.......
so i go and remove the casing in a sterile invironment and soaked up some of the water sitting underneith the casing.....
I then put the casing back into the terr. ......waited an hour or so, went back to check the gauge (digital) and again the humidity was POOP.

Today was the first day it has recieved light, there is plenty of myc(sp?) poking through the casing layer, so i am sure that light was not exposed too soon....
Anyway, i checked the gauge and the temp is right around 85 degrees, but the humidity is staying around 50%......there is alot of condensation on the walls and ceiling of the terr....the container is air-tight.

What is being done wrong??? Is this gauge bad?...is there too much standing water? with as moist as it is, and with as hot as it is i would think the humidity would be higher...... Help please,

--- i am only involved with this problem cause my friend asked me to help, now it is a mission to solve it---

What kind of hygrometer do you have? Sounds like it's either bad or needs to be calibrated.

It MUST be a defective hygrometer. If you have lots of condensation on the walls, it's got to be really humid in there. (Higher than 50%) Unless the room temp is like 65 degrees and the walls are cooling down so low that their sucking out all the humidity, but that'd be a rare occurance.

I'd blame the guage. Try another one.

// off to go buy a new gauge....ugggggg

and as far as the outside goes, it is in a closed off closet that only gets opened when it needs to be.....meaning it is a storage closet, not a clothes closet...

You know the guage is wrong. The condensation on the walls is a dead give away.

Doesn't necessarliy mean it's bad. I've had a couple that read around the high 50's-low 60's. I knew the humidity was higher than that. I calibrated them and they worked pretty well. They were never super accurate and were basicly junk anyway. But after they were calibrated they got you into the ball park. I've basicaly decided to stay away from cheapo hygrometers. If you're serious about this hobby, just spend the extra money and buy a decent unit.
