Regulating temps and humidity, fluctuations bad?
    #537180 - 01/31/02 07:32 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

My fruiting chamber is kinda hard to regulate when it comes to the exact humidity and temps you want...if it were to go down to 65degrees and 99% humidity...then i fiddle with it and get it back to 75dgrees and 93% (casings) .....would these fluctuations harm the fruiting? If I have to open the chamber to change the temp, is that a major risk of contam?

fluctuations are good actually (I'm pretty sure). Check out adaption 21 in the MMGG, its right there. When the temp drops it induces pinning (65 might be a bit low, however), and when it rises its better for growing. For casings, humidity should bbe between 80 and 90 percent. As far as getting it to fluctuate less, play with a digital timer (20 bucks at home depot) that way you can time things down to the minute and increase/decrease as needed. I know a guy that varies it throughout the day to mix things up. Don't worry about contams from opening the door, have never heard of anyone having a problem from that.

Minor fluctuations are not harmful, but if you have large temperature changes this will cause you humidity to fluctuate a lot as well. These large temperature and rH changes could cause your mushrooms to abort. I would try and insulate somehow.

Nature does this every day... it warms up in the morning through the afternoon and then cools down again at night. As rain moves in, or weather patterns change, the humidity will go up, etc etc etc ... You still must stay within the limits of the organism, but other than that, I doubt there is much of a problem. My friend has not tested this hypothesis... theory only.

Seuss you are right nature does do this all the time. That is why you do not see mushrooms all over the place all of the time. The fungi will only fruit when the right environmental conditions have been met and the mushrooms will continue to grow if the conditions remain fair for growth. If they go out of the range the mushroom will stop growing and abort.

As long as your humidity and temperature does not drop dramatically you should be ok.
