lowering humidity (accurate hygrometer?)

hi all. when i grew cakes, i obsessed about keeping humidity up. now i have casings, i want to lower it! :tongue:

the casings sit on perlite before they pin, then afterwards, the 'fruiting chamber' needs a few percent lower humidity.
the options i've considered: (1) remove perlite (2)more air exchange (3)raise temp a few degrees (4)cut holes in tub, filled with tyvek or other microfilter (5)paper towels? (6)bowl of dry vermiculite?

i've done (1), (2) and (3), but the machine still reads 100%. i'll try (4) when i can get hold of some tyvek. (5) and (6) i've just read about, but know no details.

Anyone? And can anyone recommend a GOOD hygrometer? (I'll pay for a good 'un). What are the models pictured in TMC pages 67 and 76?

Go with the air exchange. Check out meters by a company called -Oragon-

A combination of options (2) and (4) will work. I use the same model of hygrometer as SubGen1us with no complaints.

What is the brand of that hygrometer you gentlemen are speaking of? The pic was deleted of the original post. I ordered one from a cigar store, but they canceled it due to availability. I bought one for a reptile setup, but it is cheap shit that doesn't allow you to even adjust the RH gauge, just the temp part. I can see where having a semi accurate piece is like mandatory. Thanx!

then you have the wrong kind, your device is measuring relative humidity "Relative humidity, expressed as a percent, measures the current absolute humidity relative to the maximum for that temperature."

You need one that measures Absolute humidity, I use an old mechanical one, that is calibrated manually every week, by soaking paper towel letting the water run out until it is wet but not dripping fast, and wrap the Hydrometer in it and let it sit a few hours, then turn the screw on the back until the needle reads 99%.

These are the best kind for your tubs, those digital ones are usually not as good as a good mechanical one because they usually have a thermometer too, which means its measuring relative humidity. Currently in my tub of damp perlite i have a digital one and my mechanical one, the digital one reads 73% my mechanical one reads 90%. absolute humidity monitors should never read more than 99%, because if the water content of the air is 100% then its just water, and no air.
