problems with humidity
    #535529 -

I am currently cultivating the B+ strain, but I'm having problems with achieving a high enough humidity. I am using a medium sized styrofoam cooler with a large hole cut in the lid, which is covered with saran wrap on the inside and outside of the lid. I coated the entire rim of the cooler generously with vaseline for a tighter seal. I used 1.5 inches of perlite and about 10 cups of water, and yet the humidity will rarely go above 90%. The humidity gauge I am using is one for a reptile terrarium that cost about $5. I'm thinking the accuracy of these gauges may be the problem- please reply with some feedback.

Also, does anyone know of the sun-drying method of preservation? What is the process and is it superior to the tupperware/damp-rid technique?

Dude, the quality of that gauge is probably crap.

Do you have water on the walls of the terrarium?
If you do you are probably at 98 to 100% humidity.

Go buy a better gauge...Radio shack has some good ones.
Thermo-Hygrometer Sensor.....part # 63-1031.
About $24.95 to $29.99.....they had a sale up to the first of the year...$19.99.
This digital gauge seems to be very accurate.
It measures temperature and humidity.
They should pay me a commission for this damn thing.

I dry my mushrooms out on top of my computer....i wrap them up in a paper towel.
Works good for me....but i think i'm going to go get some drying crystals from a flower shop....the kind they use to dry out flowers.

hehe,
yah I used to have probably the same little red circular hydrometer. I tried forever to get that thing to read above 90, but it never got above 80.. lol.

Roadkill, if theres water on the sides of the walls, that means its most likely above 95%???

angryshroom,

Not sure about 95%....i have only had water beads on mine at 98 to 100% humidity.

Maybe i am wrong......just IMO.

Let me know if you get water beads on your sides at a lower humidity.

Get you one of those little niquil cups and almost filll it with
salt. Put enough water that the salt covered. Seal the little
cup and your hygrometer in a ziploc baggie. In 5 or 6 hours
it should say 75%. If it doesn't, take a pocket screwdriver and
calibrate it as soon as you get it out of the baggie. Put it back
and wait again. When it starts reading right, put it back in your
terrarium. You may see a difference. Good luck!

Did you calibrate your gauage? Untill you did this, you can?t say how much humidity you realy have.
Look in the Grow/Find section.
