check your water level in the perlite. dry perlite soaks up a lot of water, so you probably dont' have enough. what i do is add water, mix it in with the perlite, then keep adding water till it's about 1/2 inch down from the top of the perlite. try that, report backLink ------------------ How I wish that somewhere there existed an island for those who are wise and of good will. -Albert Einstein

Added water, but still can't seem to get humidity above 85%. Could it be that my guage is a piece of crap and is wrong? There are beads of condensation on the sides and on the Saran wrap at the top.

well, link is wrong. you'll get better results with no standing water. just damp perlite. if you follow link's suggestion, and cover the 1.5 inches of perlte with 1 inch of water, you only have .5 inches of perlite effectively adding humidity. this is inadequate for best results. better is about 1.5-2 inches of damp perlite ABOVE the water level. try it. ------------------ Visit http://www.drooldonkey.org Global Psychedelic Community, Forums & Chat, Teks & Tips.

Sillysighband, yea, if there's condensation on the sides, then your humidity fine. your gauge probably just isn't working.Hippie, i beg to differ. the bottom half of the perlite isn't exposed to the air, so it's not going to do shit humidifying it. if you don't have standing water, then the perlite will dry out really quick. you need the standing water to keep the top later damp. how much have you used perlite? from what i've read other places, you're still new at it. learn how it works before you start telling people they're wrong. Toad, what do you expect? We both think the other person is wrong. Neither of us want the other person to spread false info, or info they disagree with, so we said something.Link ------------------ How I wish that somewhere there existed an island for those who are wise and of good will. -Albert Einstein

I'm going to have to agree with Hippie3 here. If your perlite is completely saturated it won't dissipate the water. Vapor is created when the water is so thin in the perlite it is light enough to float.

no, not completely saturated. you need a top layer that doesn't have water around it. but you still need a level of water underneath that perlite.Link ------------------ How I wish that somewhere there existed an island for those who are wise and of good will. -Albert Einstein

wrong again, link. the bottom layer is exposed to air, did you think there was a vaccume down there or what ? and why do you think i'm new to perlte ? i've been using perlite going onto three years now and have enjoyed great success. i'm not just making up this shit as i go along. i've been over in ADM as long as ryche, i've been cited by pf in his latest tek for my work, and i have built a website, DroolDonkey, that in less than 2 months has nearly 300 registered members and ~ 6000 posts. oh, and have you seen my other website, HippieHaven ( http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/7382 ), with its' ~9000 hits ? my credentials are in order. ------------------ Visit http://www.drooldonkey.org Global Psychedelic Community, Forums & Chat, Teks & Tips.[This message has been edited by Hippie3 (edited May 03, 2000).]
