It looks like a Peruvianus even in the pics you submitted
the cactus has a good probability of psychoactivity so do it how you like it
Eventually the gardener eats it and he probably gets what he paid for

not if that is a KK242 (T. cuzcoensis often sold as T. peruvianus) im afraid it doesnt. If I was going to ID it i would say kk242 as well.

attached is a pdf file that explains some of the confusion around these species.

32 pages of undifferentiated gibberish. Garbled.
The cactus has blue skin and brown spines and does not look like that other that you keep mentioning.

Didn't mean to bring such chaos here. It's a wonderful cactus regardless of what it is, and I look forward to one day seeing pictures of it towering over some little human. :smile:

Hey you successful growing cacti guys (I've only got ornamentals my "cash crop" are aloes), what is Peruvian Torch like to grow (and is it "Trichocereus Peruvianus", "Echinopsis Peruviana" or both ?-links to any pictures please-)?

P.S I can't open the file above because I'm not sure if my Acrobat is legal and I need to update (techy check necessary and he ain't in town no more).

Trichocereus

Aloes are nice when they get big they pup or sprout new plants like mad.

Growing is rather straight forward. Maybe more water needed then aloe species in the summer months.

Cuttings root well and start growing fast. They like extra lime and a mineral soil. Once established they can put on a foot of growth a year. Hardy up to hard frosts i think.

Ah! Nice little Peruvian firm are selling Torch as both. I could do a half-year out half-year in with the cacti as I do with the aloes because I grow under lights indoors (and yes I need bigger ones -sigh-).

What about feeds? I use organic seaweed solution and occasional nitrogen from organic chicken manure, any tips (aloes included)?

I'd go with specially made cactus food. Too much N is apparently not a good thing for them.

That's the trouble with doing things on the cheap. Which one do you use ? Is it plant-derived bio-available or "nasties" (organic plant derived nutrients don't exactly seem to leap off the shelf).
Do you use any other minerals like suphur?

When you say mineral soil what do you mean (ie: which ones ?)? The only firm I've so far found who might produce an organic multi-mineral liquid for succulents and cacti is Stateside. I have a "Maxicrop" product ("Extract of Seaweed plus Complete Garden Feed")in my hand containing; seaweed extract, 5% Nitogen, 5% Total Phosphorous Pentoxide, 5% water soluble Phosphorous Pentoxide and 5% Total Potassium Oxide, any good?

Mineral soil meaning composed of pumice, crushed stone, pulverised sand & lime stone. Not much organics, fast drying media.

Do cacti generally need less water than succulents (my friend from the Bristol Botanical Gardens waters his aloes twice a week in the Summer, even in their conditions I reckon that it's probably too much -depends on drainage I guess-)? What percentage of the compost is "fast drying media" ?

The only rule i fallow is when the soil is dry i water. So in the summer i may be watering twice a week, maybe more if the planters are small and its super hot and sunny out. Maybe less.

Moi Aussi,however aren't they subject to seasonal weather patterns in their natural environment which means they could go nearly a year without water before they receive a large dose of seasonal rainfall?

Hell yeah! But generaly if water is available they would love to use it.

I see my aloes growing just fine if not better when i dont water them for a month or two wich is unusual.

Perdos and the like do just fine without water for a few months. Mine havn't been watered since October.

I couldn't agree more, that is their vibe (the same one that's also telling me to cut down on their nitrogen, I had to brutalise three bloomers this winter just to try and ensure that I have flower head in the summer when I need it) !

So you grow the aloes for seed? My one mama trew off a flower shoot the first season i had her. Wasnt able to flower it the past two years though.

No I grow them for flowers which I "potentise" into a vibrational remedy. Mine do flower year after year which I attribute to maximum natural light levels (those under lights will probably flower when I put them outside) and good feeding etc.
