My huge San Pedro

Been growing this for less than a year. Look at the bottle for scale--it measures about three feet from the top of the pebbles up. More stem under the surface. Circumference measures ~12-13 inches at the base; hard to say for sure because of all the spines! The flesh has a bluish matte over deep green. The growing spines at the top are transparent and red.

I got this beauty at bouncingbear, and it has grown at least a foot in less than a year. That is, I bought a two-foot cutting and this is what it looks like today. I wanted to just cook and eat it immediately, but I had to plant it; now it has gotten so magnificent i can't bring myself to butcher it.

Recently, I received a rooted cutting in a grab-bag order of SPs. It looks pretty straggly, but I have it in good soil and after all, mine are good hands. Here's hoping it pulls through and flourishes.  :grin:

I really need to start growing one...I mean, it's a cactus, I bet yo udon't have to do much for it. My apartment doesn't get much sun though...

... I've never seen a san pedro that had spines as long as that. Are you SURE it's a pedro?

that looks like peruvians, the spines being long like that.  I am growing six san pedros that I've picked up over the years (just picked up four 2-footers last week for 18 bucks!) and none of them have long spines like that.

Growing cactii is fun isn't it? :smile:

peruvianus has often more shorter spines. but this varies from where the cactus was collected.

It's San Pedro; I trust that vendor, he's always done right by me.

OMR, you do need bright sunlight or a pretty scorching grow lamp. However, it is fun to grow them. When I meditated regularly I (may have imagined I) could hear him breathing: thin little whisps of pore-breath. Also, I sometimes have "visitations" where I (may wishfully imagine I) have mescaline dreams: huge, gnarled, multicolored monster-vignette dreams with music. And I haven't eaten him yet... in a pseudo-shaman belief system you could call that entering the cactus, or the spirit of the cactus entering you.

Huge?? That's not huge mate...It is a nice specimen though. If you put it in brighter sunlight it would not be so skinny in the new growth.

Here's my 'medium sized' one...


And this...this is huge...(not mine)


By the way your one looks like it might be one of those KK242 that BBB sells.

If BBB sent you a 'peruvianus' it's a cuzcoensis, and it's bunk. Glad you don't want to eat it. It's very pretty, and you'd need a whole lot more than that cutting to catch a buzz. Grow it to grow it. :smile:

And to me, it looks like a cuzcoensis. It's a bit etoliated too, get it more light if possible. Some artificial along with the sun would be wise.

I agree with others about it not being T. pachanoi. I've never seen one with long spines either. But its definately in the family!

I have found several large specimens, similar to that one, growing in the area where I am staying in SoCal. Maybe even bigger then that. I'll have to take some pics when I get a chance.

I don't see why everyone now takes MS Smith's speculation that KK242 is cuzcoensis as gospel, cause it ain't gospel. I think the only safe thing to call KK242 is Trichocereus spp. "KK242".... There are obvious differences between KK242 and plants that I have seen in botanical gardens and books labelled as T. cuzcoensis.

Yeah dude, sorry, but out of the hundreds of san pedros i've seen, that doesn't looke like one. It does look like a Trich. peruvianus, which is still really sweet! You should really look into what that cactus is. Find out when exactly you ordered it, and message BBB about it, show em the pic. They should be able to figure it out, and maybe even hook you up.

Reguardless, it's a beautiful cactus.

Alright. Whether it's T. cuzcoensis or not, it's still a kk242, and most likely void of popular alkaloids.
