Straining myc from a LC
    #5229947 -

Has anybody strained large amounts of myc from an LC? the (bullshit) psilocybin producers guide says to strain with a "clean flannel cloth". Is there a better way? I tried before with wine filters without success. I also have bubble bags for making hash I think the finest one may work.

Why would you want to strain it? all that mycelium floating in there could become shrooms.

I am just doing an experiment to see if harvesting myc is a feasible option, I figure the producers guide is off by a factor of 10, I would be fermenting large 20l containers of LC. It could also be used for super thick LCs if there was a sterile way to go about it.

Im not sure on a sterile way of doing this but a coffee filter will work, the paper type.
And Im glad to hear you say thats the reason for straining, I though you where going to say you wanted to trip off of the mycelium....

I want to try that too. I know it is frowned upon or people say it wont work, or to just grow them. Well I do grow them, it is just an experiment. Agar has done it in the past and said it is not worth the trouble. But he did say it was active.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=Forum2&Number=4243815

He estimated 1oz from 5 gallons, 28g from 18.925 litres,

The estimate is 1.5g dry per litre and is 20-25% as potent as fruits so a 20l container would yeild the equivalent of 6-7.5g of dry cubensis.

Well I am going to try a 35litre batch. I have an ancient can of malt extract knocking about, and a fresh KS LC ready to inoculate. I have a container which will hold 35 litres, put in a stainless steel element and will boil it with the cap loosely on. I have 2 self healing holes in the cap and no filter. I will shake every day and strain after 2 weeks. Then filter it through my bubble bags, dry the myc and test it out. Going by agars best figures it would be equivalent to about 13g of dry cubes.

agar tried this... pm him.

i think he harvested it in a 50 gal drum, or was going to.

came back with NO success.

I posted the link already above, and he did grow myc which was then eaten. he didnt think it was worthwhile to repeat, but I would not say "NO success"

fucking do it.

why not? you arent using that 35 liter container for any other liquid cultures right? you want to use a bunch of shit that is not even being used from what it sounds like. i don't see anything negative about doing it, and you seem to want to, so do it.

if this 35 liter container is not clear, i would try to get a clear one. it'd be cool to make this in a glass wine cask. ideally, you could modify the rubber stopper for the cask to have injection and filtration. they are already just like the stoppers for erlenmeyer flasks that have 1 or two holes for tubes and shit. then you can see the growth. a magnetic stirrer would help a ton if you had to do a wine cask. also, you did not explicitly say this as far as i can remember--you will want to wash the myc, not just strain it. its still going to have culture solution/wastes/offensive materials. don't use distilled water either. things rapidly dissolve into distilled water. make sure the culture solution is not the most offensive to the tastebuds. i don't need to tell you "no poo tea" but i think that potato dextrose no yeast or that straight malt you were planning on would be good.

log it.

Maybe add a few quarts of sterilized poo.
One would think it would supply the necessary nutes for stronger production of actives.
Think of straight malt/dex as pf cakes (in terms of nutes) vs poo

I am, it is built and tested at boiling. My "starter LC" ended up being contamed though. I now have to start another so it is going to be next weekend hopefully.

I did just that before with a 4.5litre jar, I did not have a proper way to filter and it took days to dry out using a heat pad and fan, I decanted the clear liquid off. I was unsure if it was contaminated so tossed it out.

I was going to just strain it, I dont think there will be too many nasties. I did worry that they actives would be dissolved in the liquid I pour away. I am using apple juice for LCs these days which would certainly be palatable. But I have that malt left over. The potato is an interesting idea, there is a limit to how much sugar I can add but no limit on potato, I just wonder if it would clog up my filterbag, or if it does get fully digested.

If you wanna try it then by all means, do. But even if it is a success, I don't see what good it would do. There is no way that you can beat the amount of psilocybin you'd have if you would just grow all of it out, compared to if you strained out a nasty mess of myc sludge and extracted it for peanuts.

just my $0.02

A dose in 1-2 weeks, extreme stealth since it looks like a beer brew. Say it was possible to get the equivalent of 13g dry every week. That is 676g per year in that small space.

If you want stealth and ease then I'd suggest sclerotia! I've got a first sclerotia attempt going right now and I honestly forget about it all the time. Last time I looked there were already stones forming after just 4 weeks! I'm using the Atlantis #7 strain from Sporeworks...

2 parts Rye grass seed/ 1part water (by volume) in a jar (no soaking or simmering, just put it in there) > PC for 50 mins > Shake > Innoc > incubate in dark place at room temp > After you see some myc growing, shake again > forget > harvest!

No FC, no humidity bullshit, and you'll get real fungus that is supposedly worth eating (haven't tried 'em yet, but I'm eager!). But seriously, it's like the easiest fucking thing I've ever done! Ultimate stealth too!

I'll make a post with pics if I can get my hands on a camera that would take good detail of sclerotia through glass...

no doubt the yeild of sclerotia would far exceed that of a LC in the same amount of space!

Yes, I highly recommend sclerotia, check my sig!
I have a few sclerotia logs here. It is very stealthy but does take a while though I have found atlantis to be far quicker than mexicana A, which was touted as a fast strain compared to tamps. Maybe the altantis would be a better strain, the fruit bodies should be stronger than cubensis so maybe the myc would be too.
Check out this idea I had for sclerotia using the same container I have.

"I'll make a post with pics if I can get my hands on a camera that would take good detail of sclerotia through glass..."

Hes not looking for a way to do a stealth grow for himself, hes trying new things that can be used later. Personally I think its a waste too, but he could probably tell you more about sclerotia, the atlantis 7 strain, invitro methods, and every other growing method then you could tell him.. Experimenting involve wasting time, to try things to see if they work and see if they dont. I've thought other things were a waste of time too, that others find very usfull to them.

People to often try to find other ways around answering peoples question. Thats all fine and good when your helping a newbie who may or may not have heard of a teknique, however I'm sure blackouts read every single one of them, and tried out a damn good number of him. The question had to do with straining LC, not "Do you know any ways to grow stealhy"..

I would probably use potato flakes. I wonder how thick I could go with it.

duh! LOL! I didn't see all that in your sig or else I wouldn't have wasted my time telling you shit you already know (at least the info is there for the newbs reading this). lol!

Well like I said, if you wanna try it then by all means do! We can question your reasons but we can't stop you...
