What's the deal with Sclerotia???

well, i've read some stuff about Sclerotia forming with psilocybe mexicana and tampenisis (sp?). And I have a few questions to ask. I've read that, with strain-A-psilocybe mexicana, it's very easy to grow large amounts of sclerotia without ever removing the cakes from the jars. just keep in the dark at room temp. for 2 or 3 months. Now, i'm wondering why it is that more people don't use this tecnique?? what is the relative potency between Sclerotia and mushroom fruiting bodies per unit mass?? Is there a reason that Sclerotia are not of large interest to the mushroom growing community? or is it just that people don't know about this property of psilocybe mexicana?
any help is appreciated

It is a new thing. Thanks to Workman, there is now a strain available which is a good producer of invitro sclerotia. I'm sure more people will begin doing this; in fact dude plans on getting started very soon! I believe that the potency of mexicana sclerotia will be the same per gram as mexicana fruitbodies. One benefit is that the sclerotia is about 30% dry to wet, whereas the fruits are 10% dry to wet. if i remember correctly, it has just been within the past year, that P. mexicana prints/spores have become available to much of the OMC. Yep, just like Olgualion said, it's a new thing. I believe that many are waiting for more cultavation/trip reports about if before jumping in. To be honest, I had really never heard of Sclerotia untill WorkMan made his post here.

thanks a lot Olgualion, i did not know how new mexicana was but that makes a lot of sense. is the A strain the best for sclerotia growth and yield? I am very interested in this whole deal and am currently making plans to get started on it as well. It would be great if someone could inform me on the best strain to use thank you.

one more thing... does anyone know of a good substrate to grow this on? sorry about all the questions heh... i guess that since it's so new, there aren't many answers.

At this point in time, the A strain is definitely the best(available) for invitro sclerotia(Workman has done a lot of work with it). I'm sure at some point in the future there will be better strains, but this is all we have to work with so far. You also said something in your original post about P. tempanensis sclerotia. I believe it is Una who has isolated an excellent strain which produces sclerotia abundantly in casings! I don't know if this is available though.. Oq

It has not been a secret that these species produce sclerotia, they just haven't been readily available to the OMC. Supposedly rye grass seed is the best substrate for producing sclerotia (Stamets).

id try it but to produce the scloreta takes a good 2 months in the jars. maybe ill work with that once my goal of actually tripping with my friends is done as a mycology project butu for now im just looking for some mushrooms. but aniiway last post i read (cant remember who it was) but they harvested a good amount (about 100 dry grams) from a quart jar. my big thing was that it took him 3 months of letting the jar sit.
-------------------- Holy shit people; COMMON SENSE! we were all born with it where did it go? maybe theres a tek out there to explain how to use it! BUCKETS BRIGADE left hand man!!!

Sclerotia is merely an alternate expression of the life cycle. When environmental conditions are not conducive to fruiting(a hot dry summer),the mycelium produces the slerotia as a survival mechinism. In this state, the species survives the drought to complete the fruiting cycle.I have dryed slerotia 10 years old that still fry you and remain viable for succesful fruitings.

a new thing? you guys must be kidding, sclerotia have always been side projects for mycologists here..philosopher stones. its just something interesting to do...it wont give you spectacular yeilds or anything. Just something to play around with. Yes they do fuck you up but so will the many flushes you have while youre waiting for sclerotia to produce.

I don't think you need a tek.... Just grow some P. Mexicana on rye grass seed and leave it in the dark in the jar for three months and harvest.

I'm wondering what the potency is like with sclerotia? More less or about the same as fruits?

From personal experience I must state that sclerotia from Mexicana strain A and from tampanensis are equal in potentcy which is nearly 1 1/2 - 2 times as potent as most cubensis. I do not find sclerotia very visual as most of the experience is based in psychological inner dialogue with ones self. Sclerotia has an experience much like azurescens which I don't find very visual either but extremely potent with inner dialogue as well. Pureto ricans, pan-cyans, and mexicana(fruits) have by far been the most visual of the psilos I have tried. Im in opinion, it breaks down like this: Potentcy-->azurescens, pan-cyan, puerto rican, mexicana(fruits), sclerotia(tamp or mexi), b+ Everyone is different, everything varies in potentcy and sometimes shit happens.
