Thoughts on the education system/or any indoctrinating institution....
    #4813035 -

There are some things that I think should be left alone until critical thinking skills are developed.

For example: some topics in history, and some metaphorical stuff in the bible....or any religious text.

Any other thoughts?

And for those critical thinking skills as you mentioned, I think logic should be mandatory in schools [starting from reasonable grades of course].

We all know people who are very bright but who do not always shine when it comes to being logical. They have the ability to think logically - that is, clearly and effectively - but that ability does not habitually manifest itself. The likelihood is that it has never been properly developed, pointing to a deficiency in their education. Indeed, logic is the very backbone of a true education, and yet it is seldom taught as such in American [public] schools. IMHO, logic is the missing piece of the American [public] educational system, the subject that informs every other subject from English to history to science and math.

Aside from that, I think Financial Literacy is sorely needed in [public] schools as well, as the financial literacy in the U.S. is alarmingly low.

One of the main problems is that such changes take ridiculously long in the American educational system. This is why Britain and other European countries are at least three years ahead of the U.S., in that respect.

They try to teach in increments. The pursuit of knowledge is a persoanl repsonsibilty. If you want indepth information then it is to you to pursue it. The gradation of shcools is just for that. Why should a person who has no desire or aptitude be forced to learn what makes it possible for some creatures to live off and metabolize iron at the bottom of 30,000 feet of salt water.

logic is an inate skill that can be honed. I don't think education is going to make a person who is unable to think logically think logically. at the same time I think its i imperative to allow everyone the smae chance to develope those skills. I think the system is flawed but not because of the material deemed appropriate. It seems to me the real problem is a lack of national education parity. Why should one part of the country have better paid and therefore moreskilled teachers than another? Why should one school system have a curriculum better suited for the future than another? I think the schools in Maerica should have a national curriculum that teaches economics(micro and macro), one that requires a foreing langague for all students! Probably Spanish and latin. A school that demands a rich understanding for arithmetic. A system that provides the entire country with the same education.

Here are some ideas as to how it could be done.

- Find the best ran local system in the country and appropriate the mthods which make it successful.
-Have a national curriculum.
-Start the language trainig early so as to provide the greatest retention and success rate.
-Hold the students to strict aptitude stnadards.

damn skorpivo my sentiments are remarkably similar to yours. I hate the management and politicization of education in this country. why not teach evolution and then off intelligent design as an elctive for those who want it?

Teachers should be highly paid highly specialized professionals If you got your degree in English, teach english not chemistry. If we paid them more then netter people would seek employment in an area that is vital to our future. All the qualified individuals are seeking work in other places, pr communications, law and shit like that cause that is where the money is. Give the money to the teachers and watch how many brilliant people seek employment there instead of the private sector.

running dangerously close theological issues.
values and mores and beliefs, allthat shit would be kept aside from schools becuase basic human goodness is scary to the evil motherfuckers who want to stop people from knowing what a good person is.

Sex education scary, why becuase people are stupid and sheilding them will keep them safe,

Honesty and faith, sheild them becuase a belief in something not seen negates parents control over the direction of the kids.

relgigon, sheild them because your god is an asshole and mine is not. I don't want my child knowing your peaceful god, i would rahter him know mine with his promises of ale and womeon in a longhall.

fuck this shit!!!!!

yuck. forcing children to think "logically" is a terrible idea, not only would it be abusive towards their fresh young minds, but its also redundant as they learn to "think critically" through the study of countless other subjects.

Actually, most people do not learn to think critically or logically by osmosis. If this were so, organized religion would be a non-starter. There is nothing wrong or abusive with teaching children to use the tools of logic, once their minds are developed enough to grasp the concepts just as there is nothing wrong with teaching mathematics or physics.
