true, he saw an UNIDENTIFIED flying object.

RP2: I saw one 10 years ago. I was on DXM and shrooms and it was cool!
true, he saw that. what was the role of the drugs?
.
Swami: What you saw was a mylar balloon floating over a swamp reflecting Venus...
FALSE, you were not even there. Why is it *not true* while you know nothing other than that someone believes they saw something?

This is precisely why we need two forums. Instead of the whole "spiritual" (UFOs are just UFOs) story someone utters one squeak of belief and before anyone has gottenh the whole story out of him the person is sledgehammered down with a mylar balloon and venus and nobody learned anything new.

There are many people (I think most) who want the entire story of that UFO sighting without it being shot down before it's even up.
If Skepticism is hunting, then S&P Skepticism often resembles shooting pigeons in a cage. If you like the sight of pigeons exploding thats ok but don't call it hunting because it isnt.

We already have a "question everything" forum. It is S&P today. We have no spirituality forum, free-flying pigeons are caught, stuffed in cages and brought to the firing range.

There is the notion that S&P is *owned* by logic-people and that spiritual opinions intrude on their turf.

Both need their own turf, and both can visit each other as long as they retain a respectful attitude.
If this had been the case NOW than the idea for a split wouldnt even come up.

the clash is the whole point of the forum. Splitting up S and P would be like splitting the political forum into conservative/liberal

I agree, but apparently this aspect which I find interesting also ends up making certain people butthurt. So I'm willing to concede to such people their own forum

Now, will they all actually come out of the closet and post in their forum, or remain traumatized and have all this hubub for nothing?
I wonder if it is that they don't want their threads turning into debate, or if it is they don't want their ideas debated period. If the latter is the case, then even if their faith thread remains untouched, will it offend them when their idea is posted in the debate forum and tore apart(or held up) through scrutiny?

I, for one, have a hard time understanding the reasoning for not wanting an idea tore apart. If you make a thread about camels being gods, then what is the expectation of the thread?

A: camels are gods
B: could be
A: thank you
B: your welcome

What is the value in that aside from putting an idea out into the world. It may make people think about it, but without any debate where can it lead?

I like to see...

A: camels are gods
B: what makes you think that?
A: i prayed to one for a popsicle, went home, and there was a popsicle
B: were there popsicles in your home before you left and prayed to the camel?

Paradigm, you speak of cowardice but some people just do not want to do battle at all.
Thanks for highlighting the problematic atmosphere where everyone is forced to defend themselves.

And like OTD and The Pub you might be surprised how many may end up posting in the "fluffy" forum once the forum is split.

Sometimes you want a discussion, at other times you want an exchange.

I'm a skeptic, I do not believe in god or gods. But what I see as wrong is people pushing others into their beliefs, like the christian right is trying to do with the USA citizens

What I do like to see is those who consider themselves skeptics, people of science/truth/fact, etc.. Conduct themselves with debate that doesn't involve insulting your counterpart.

You never convince or warm your opposition to your way of thinking if you do it with aggression, as they will outright ignore your points and focus on your hostility or rudeness. However if you TRULY want to affect change on someone who opposes your views; the BEST and most EFFECTIVE method is simply by respecting that they have a right to their view (no matter how wrong or silly) and debate them with logic and respect.

I'm only 32 years old, but my god I learned this when I was a teenager, I used to be at block parties discussing religion and me bringing up all kinds of arguments over why I felt all religion was so flawed, etc.. People used to come up to me later after the discussions to 'thank' me for being the first athiest who seemed to listen to their side and show respect for their opinions.

But what I see in some of my skeptic friends in real life is they are angered by the fact people don't agree with their view and they just can't debate such personal issues without being assholes about it, and its very sad because I was tought a long time ago that the moment you get angry in a debate you have lost, no matter if you are making stronger points, the moment you lose your temper or start using sarcasm, rudeness, etc.. you are the loser of that debate.

The internet is even worse for this, people hide behind computers and have little fear of what they say, afterall you are just a name on a screen. It takes MORE strength of character to just debate with respect.

By the way I'm not claiming I'm a super human debater, far from it, I've often lost my temper in dealing with people here online.. But thats why I spend most of my time outside of forums like political forum and spirituality forums.

Anyhow for whatever happens in the S&P forum HAS to be agreed upon by the users of that forum, I would not feel comfortable in pushing anything on that forum since I'm not an active poster there.

I will take my cue from the users and the mods of that forum as you all need to decide your own fate, I will only step in if anyone gets out of line or I am asked to make a decision you all cannot agree upon.

Thought about it some more. The Spirituality forum would be best suited for those who have chosen a certain belief system and would like to discuss it without any question. Sort of like a bible study class.
The philosophy forum would be best suited for those who have chosen no one belief system and would like all the sides represented.

indeed, and pwn was invented because the crew that 0wn3d people (usually shooting newbies who correctly assumed they were on the same team) were such an unpleasant bunch that many gameservers banned the words own and 0wn. So to keep on sucking they invented pwn to bypass the gameservers moderator functions and keep up their sniping of newbies (which it often was in many games)

Do you want to compare the Philosophy crew with that lot?
Lose the pwn metaphor, because it might just be appropriate

Everyone keeps talking about this "aggression" that we skeptics have, but frankly, I don't see it. The only negative attitudes displayed by skeptics here are towards those who hide from and fear rational discussion. Rational discussion itself is not aggressive or hostile. It is inquisitive. Rarely in S&P do I see skeptics claiming the others' views are wrong. Usually, the claim is that the other person is making unreasonable assumptions or jumping to conclusions based on insufficient evidence. I see nothing aggressive or hostile about this.

lol you 'owned' him! sorry couldn't help it

I'm warming up to this idea myself, at first I wasnt sure if this was the right way to go, but we could test this for say 3 months and re-evaluate it later.

Paradigm: some people don't want their thoughts etc taken apart. Because they are learning from them, getting to know them. In this delicate state they don't want to be pounded into the ground.

Trial by Philosophy is only OK if your idea is *ready* to be tested yet.

I'm sorry but S&P rational discussion isnt as much about *inquisitiveness* (wanting to know) as it is about *dismissing non-logicalo ideas* rejection.

And we all know rejection hurts like a bitch.

Well many people take their precious thoughts to S&P to communicate them and they get full-contact REJECTION after the first post of the thread, nobody asking WHY, but all of them saying WHY NOT.

Then something has to happen. Spirituality is downtrodden the second it fails to be logical. And "God" cannot be proven. So there is no God.
See? It just so happens 80% of the world is religious...

Judging by the lack of reason I've seen in your posts, it doesn't surprise me that you would see it that way. That is not the case, from what I've seen. I've posted some non-rational(not irrational) ideas in that forum about my spiritual beliefs, and they did not meet with outright rejection. People questioned those beliefs and how I arrived at them, but fortunately I'm mature enough to understand the difference.

So if I express disbelief towards a particular idea, I'm being hostile?

I have not seen any such arguments put forward by any skeptics in that forum. This is one of many cases I've witnessed of you seeing things which aren't there.

Just as it is the user's responsibility not to provoke others, it is the user's responsibility not to be easily provoked. When you are feeling offended, sometimes it's up to you to keep the peace. The moderators are not here to coddle.
Being too-easily provoked creates just as much of a disturbance as being provocative.

Could we take a moment to de-polarize the skeptics and true-believers?  If we keep hammering on the victim/attacker roles, there is no opportunity to discuss the interaction.  The rules for S&P clearly define that provocation is a two-way street.  No one can hurt your feelings or provoke you unless you cooperate.

Has Swami made a single post in this thread Wiccan, where you have not accused him of being mean? How'd you like it if I did that to you?

How do you know what he INTENDS with his words?

How did you learn to read minds? When do you intend to get good at it?

If you wish to have people respect each other's beliefs, follow your own advice. Please respect Swami's opinions in this, an opinion thread.

Are you in favor of splitting S&P because of a forum wide problem, or because of one member with whom you have a problem?

Paradigm, Veritas, you are making some strong points.

The best name suggestion I've seen so far is:

Philosophy and Rationalism
Spirituality and Mysticism

Well Tren, if we had:

Beliefs and Debate
Spirituality and Mysticism

People could choose between:

B&D or S&M :rofl2:
