You know, i remember days when the shroomery used a "democracy" to decide what should and shouldnt happen, who should and shouldnt moderate... an ya know what? It SUCKED! sure, we got some good things done too, but the fact was that the majority of users didnt care WHY something happened, as long as the person they voted for was doing it (hmmm.... reminds me of the US sometimes). I dont want OTD to "dissapear" either, but I cant ignore the fact that things can and do get bad in there... and as much as people say they are joking about stuff... that doesnt make it funny for all of us, and it doesnt meen that it belongs here at the shroomery.

umm as far as i know no one has died in otd... havent a few peeps died (as in no longer exist in REAL LIFE) in chat?? shit get craZy there too...why not go clean that up as well? chat almost got this site into fuckload of trouble with the ripper shit....and then what about odd talking about dangerous pills and such...

Yes, 2 friends of mine died while in chat, and it really SUCKS. I wish i could have been there, or done something about it. But, im there now, and i really really wish i could make up for the time i wasnt there, when I could have done something to save my friends, but i cant. Even if i had been there, could I have done anything about it? who knows. Some days I still cry for Brandon (aka Ripper)... and if you think im a pussy for that, the FUCK YOU. He was a friend of mine, and i really do miss him.

as far as the boards are concerned... how bout loOner and Freak? just to name a few. I dont wana drudge up shit right now about that, theres enough going on im sure... but does anyone even know if they are ok or still alive? I have a hard time believing, as sad as it may seem, that we havnt lost more people from the BBs then we know about. I really hope that isnt the case, but I sadly think it is.

moosehead: yes, any changes could be reversed... but we cant bring someone back whos dead (yes KOTT... IRL)

exactly my point suffer, 90% of these otd haters dont ever post there! they pop in one day see something they dont like and cry to a mod... the people and mods that matter to otd know no change is needed.

I would have to agree, there are thousands of members who have come and gone for one reason or another on the BB, not so many in chat.  This is why we know more about the people who have died in chat better than on the bulletin boards... the sheer volume of people on the BB makes it more difficult to keep up with everyone. 

People in chat also seem to develop tighter bonds with other people and truly get to know them... You can learn so much more about someone while talking to them in real time as opposed to a few posts a day..

-- And as for those who say that chat is a security risk, well then they don't know much about computers and shouldn't be using one in the first place :smile:

KOTT, I love ya bro but if you don't realize why these changes must be made, you need to re-think some things.

I came to this forum and posted in Cultivation for a while, trying to learn and soak up as much info as possible. Then of course I found OTD and basically I loved it, it  truly is a one of a kind place. I posted there for quite a while and frankly I didnt know what a message board was all about, I'm sure I made quite a fool out of myself.

The forum is great, and I am all about "freedom". The problem comes in when you cant even post a topic without getting insulted and having your thread jacked, or worse yet buried by a bunch of useless crap.
Also what really gets under my skin is when a user posts a serious thread about something like the death of a close friend, and certain users make heartless comments and do nothing but disrespect them.

Thats not what this board is for, plain and simple.
OTD IS being abused and those who are abusing it dont deserve to be here.

Do you know that the people at Erowid, Lyceaum, and Spiritplants have little respect for this site because it is full of a bunch of immature disrespectul punks. Frankly, I dont want it to continue like this.

BTW a friend told me that a similar change is going on over at Dextroverse, they are having the same type of problem.. a bunch of retards with no courtesy or respect flooding the community forums with garbage. Their simple solution, behave or be banned. They banned a shitload of users and the board has taken on a new face. That is what I would like to see here, dont worry we arent going to take away your OTD, we are just going to tweak it a bit and get rid of the users that dont deserve to post here.

Summary: IRC is an insecure, public space; have fun, but be cautious.

Confidentiality. The IRC space is completely insecure with respect to confidentiality. Any user on IRC can record the conversation on a channel, and many people do. Anyone administering one of the servers on the network can record all of the conversations on that network.

The one protection you have is that your identify should be restricted to your nickname. However, your real identify could be discovered based on your IP address in the unlikely event someone went to the trouble of breaking into the IRC web server logs.

On systems like DALnet that provide you with a permanent nickname your identity is technically easier to discover, although in normal circumstances an IRC administrator will not provide this information to third parties unless under a valid court order.
Gender. IRC is a large public space, like a big city, and a woman can sometimes attract unwanted attention. Women shouldn't choose feminine nicknames unless they want to advertise their gender, and may want to choose a neutral name like "Yukon" or something similar.
Personal information. Never under any circumstance give out your address, phone number, real name, or other identifying information to anybody on the Internet, no matter who they say they are or what the reason is.
Viruses. Never run an IRC script or type a command that someone else asks you to, unless you are absolutely sure you know what it does. For example, the IRC command "/fserve 1 c:\" can give a hacker access to your hard drive. Other commands can give a hacker complete control of your IRC session with very undesirable results. This ability of IRC to run scripts has been exploited by worms to propagate across the Internet.

in regards to OTD being used as a chat

is this because there are so many posts that wind up going through that place in any given day?...cause if it is - since when is forum popularity a bad thing?

is it because of the supposed 'quality' of the posts that go through there?...what determines quality? or better yet - who determines quality?...if, let's say, a post contains a single word (indeed, or w3rd, or what have you) does the lack of content automatically equate to the lack of importance of such content?

or is it simply because of the fact that conversations move faster there then in any other forum?...again - since when is forum popularity a bad thing? (OTD is known for having more people viewing it at any given time then most other forums, as well as having an extremely large variety of different subjects being discussed at any given point in time...a ton of people + a lot of topics to discuss = many people conversing on many different topics as fast as they can type...what else would you expect given the circumstances?)




and as far as things getting outta hand goes

again - what the fuck did you expect? look at the real world for a second and tell me what happens when you get too many animals (of any sort) crammed up within the same ecosystem - they fight...it's part of life, it's bound to happen, get over it

by regulating OTD all you're doing (in essence) is inforcing population control - you're issuing hunting liscences and regulating how much these creatures are able to fight with eachother...this is all unnescessary bullshit that's equilvilent to us humans constantly sticking our nose where it doesn't belong, and screwing up our envirnment even more in the proccess - it's best to just let nature run it's course (that is what it does best you know) and to learn to just flow with the times, and accept things for what they are (e.g. if you're not satistfied with the way OTD (or any other forum for that matter) is going, then find somewhere else to hang out for a while - cause sooner or later the winds willl change (all on their own) and things with begin reverting back to the way they once were...this is the very nature of existence people - and yes, that does apply to virtual existences (e.g. internet forums) just as much as it applies to the so called 'real' world...and if you don't believe me - ask someone who has actually been here a while and seen the ebb of the forums for themselves (or better yet - shut the fuck up an sit back for a while yourself and witness it first hand))











my point is ---> people are always so damn quick to try an make their mark, that they jump into these self-induced savior modes and start getting all gung-ho about how they're gonna make such an incredible difference that their contributions will change things for the better indefinately...but of course, they never have enough common sence to realize that nature has a way of working out these sorts of things all on it's own (it's called the path of least resistence) and as long as we let nature run it's course an quit trying to interfere with everything - everything will work out just as it's meant to, the way that that it works the best...and even though you (with all your infinate hubris) might think that you can do things better - you can't (deal with it)

the shroomery is bigger then any of us...we need to stop tryin to domesticate it and start learning how to live in symbiosis with it

That was a very broad statement. The internet in generall is an insecure public space. Maybe on EFNet or some other server, but I'm talking about the Shroomery's IRC server.

Everyone should know now to run .exe's that you don't trust, so if you are going to run an IRC client you shouldn't go around using untrusted scripts on the net, just download the plain MIRC and you will be guaranteed a virus free chat.

We also offer a java based irc client which goes even further to help protect you against recieving any type of virus or any commands that could expose your harddrive to anyone.
