Split S&P? Admins, please weigh in.
    #4718128 -

There was a thread in S&P entitled Belittling people. In this thread a discussion took place regarding the possible ways of catering to the two separate groups of thought(rational and faith). Two options seemed prevalent; splitting S&P, and using a disclaimer when scrutiny of an idea is unwanted.
From this I made a post in the thread that contained a poll asking which of the two ideas the members supported. As you can see, the prevailing opinion was to split S&P.

I think it would be prudent to make an identical poll in this forum and let the members decide. SkorpivoMusterion proposed the idea of a 90 day test run(in the case of a split forum) in this post. I second the idea.

Obviously the final call is up to you, so let us know your thoughts.

This is being discussed, and the Admin would like to see what the public thinks. Rather than waiting for the Admins, just START A POLL... with no loaded words like, "Sissy" to influence the vote.

I'm very interested to see what people think about this.

Split S&P into two forums?

Or,

Enforce a disclaimer.... If someone doesn't wish to have their beliefs questioned, they should SAY SO in the begining of their thread. then, if anyone provokes them unjustly, the provoker will get warned/banned.

In favor of having two forums for both partisans in question; Philosophy and Spirituality, I quote Trendal:

"Splitting up OTD into OTD and The Pub has apparently worked wonders - so instead of having one forum full of clashing personalities, we have two VERY active forums with people who tend to gravitate towards eachother. "

Which sums up my stance on this issue in a nutshell.

One person's religion is another's philosophy... I like the disclaimer. I'd miss the glorious mess that is S&P.

Less everyone forget, it was the carnage-in-his-wake Swami who first proposed this idea many years ago to make everyone happier. (Do a search on Koombayah if the records go back that far.)

Can you vote for something that the Devil suggested and still keep your soul?

Are UFOs spiritual or philosophical? Chocolate or peanut butter?

Is the advent of Man or the birth of the Universe faith-based or rational?

I think seperating them along subject lines will prove to be impossible.

Make one for debate where all ideas may be freely challenged and one for sharing / support only.

Fiath and Spirituality: for those who want no disssent.

Spirituality and Philosphy forum for those who want their truths tested.

There's enough overlap there for eveyone to be happy.

3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Well it's not that simple actually. There at the moment is too much dissent emanating from the Philosophy camp. that makes many Spirituality people decide to either post on guard or not at all.
Threads end up hijacked, threadstarters disappointed and feeling misunderstood or even bullied. Messy stuff.

When I think of Skepticism I think of the Discovery Channel show "Mythbusters" where myths are taken on in a friendly atmosphere, which is a far cry to less debate-skilled Spirituality members getting seal-clubbed in their own thread by hostiles calling themselves Philosophical skeptics. Why do skepticism and verbal aggression have to go hand in hand?

This at the moment is a dominant problem in the S&P. Wide-eyed Spirituality discussion is nearly impossible in the forum nowadays.
We have far less people posting there than would want to if it weren't such a battlefield. A lot of Philosophy posters too.

If you separate the forums it is very clear where you are:

Spirituality & Mysticism -- Seeking through direct experience
Philosophy & Rationalism -- Seeking through applying thought

When two bunnies bite eachother all the time at one point you have to think about putting them in seperate cages. There will be less hostilities (with less consequences) and more posting in both forums.

I'd say we try splitting S&P into two forums.

This is being discussed among S&P mods right now. There will be a poll at S&P in the next 24 hours.

Spirituality & Mysticism -- Seeking through direct experience

Hmmm, can one have direct experience of Atlantis, of life-after-death, of the beginning of the Universe? (Does DMT count?)

They don't. It is only in the eyes of fragile egos that they appear to do so.

I agree.  What one person calls verbal aggression, another calls active inquiry.  I appreciate having my expressed beliefs examined & feel it is my responsibility to mind my tender ego attachments.

P.S. I have looked at other Spirituality forums & was put off by the self-congratulatory, we're-so-enlightened tone they promoted.  I hope that a split here would not create a similar spirit in our Spirituality forum.

Why do skepticism and verbal aggression have to go hand in hand?

Why do beliefs, con artists, televangelist frauds, comet-causing mass suicides, poisoned Kool-Aid and war have to go hand-in-hand?

I think that at the onset of a split we'll have the large majority of current S&P posters participating in both forums. The characteristics each forum will take on from there is really dependent on how dramatic the shift of users is. While you can have well-founded and defensible spiritual discussion there's the distinct possibility of the personalities promoting such discussion gravitating to what I feel would be a more academically serious philosophy forum.

I'm all for a split, at least on a trial basis. Should be entertaining.

Are you so desperate for your fix of undermining spirituality that you're even doing it in the WA&F? :rotfl:
(this is Cynicism btw, that other Greek school of philosophy)

Fragile egos have rights too, in fact for most people it only starts to get interesting if their ego loses its stranglehold over their minds. Thats spirituality, contrary to most philosophy currently practiced, hence a seperate forum.

Many people here feel that spirituality and philosophy, as practiced on these boards, are incompatible, hence they need two forums.

Swami, you're the only one in S&P I can see packing a truck with explosives and heading for the infidels.

Again, this is Cynicism, the other Greek school of philosophy.

Calling the author of a valid question 'desperate' is a flame as it is a personal attack and adds nothing to the discussion.

Are you setting an example for what is acceptable?
