Amanita muscaria's? Help needed.

* Habitat: England, Near Chester, Delamere Forrest, altitude not know but can't have been more than a couple of meters above sea level, growing in Fern bushes in soil with dead leaves and sticks around them. * Characteristics of the gills: white, not attached gills quite close together. * Characteristics of the stem: 15cm x 2.5cm, white, feels like it has a soft outer layer of fleshy skin that isn't fully attached, when I first picked them, this skin stuck to my fingers, thick stem slightly thinner at top (very slightly), solid, over all feels spongy but strong, veil still attached. * Characteristics of the cap: 1 of the mushrooms was convex (10cm, Pic3) but the other were flat becoming concave (10-15cm, Pic 4), spherical, smooth, kind of sticky, rubbery, red/orange (one that I didn't pick because it was kind of mushy was scarlet red) with white bits on. * Spore print color: I'm currently making a spore print, white or black paper? I've used white. * Color that the mushroom bruises: no visable bruising * Scent of the mushroom: regular store bought mushroom smell. * Anything else you might find important: There was about 6 of them all big but I only picked 2 because the rest had holes in or were slimy/mushy.

I know I can't get a positive I.D. until I have a spore print but if anyone could tell me anything, I would be grateful.
Also if anyone wants any pictures of them in their habitat just ask.

I read that Fly Argaric's have white spore prints so I changed the paper from white to the darkest I could find, green, after about 20 minutes on the white paper, I can see a few off white spores.
Will put up a proper print pic when its ready.

In this case a spore print is not really required. It appears that it is an amanita, but we need to see the entire base of the stem in good detail to confirm or deny muscaria... There are other species of amanita that have red coloration on the cap surface. With amanitas, it's best to carefully dig the base of the stem out of the ground because it is an important feature needed to try and classify it to at least section or subgenus. Muscaria is one of the easier to identify species in the genus, considering the distinct ring pattern on the base of the stem.. but exact species ID's for amanitas are usually very hard, considering it is such a large genus.

Thanks for your help.
Well sadly I was just passing through the area and happened to spot these and now I'm home again, I doubt I will be visiting the site again for atleast another weak, so I guess I won't be able to get a positive I.D. with out the base of the stem?

I always use the base of stem as a golden rule.. I try to be especially careful as to how I word things in ID posts. Amanitas can be dangerous and are not well documented/studied. The species also vary by continent.. I've picked various amanitas including muscaria in north America for well over 10 years but never set foot in europe. The fact that there are many toxic species also convinces me to use caution in approaching these types of posts. Very nice work on your description though. I really appreciate seeing people take the time to write out a detailed description.

I think when I've got the print I'll plant it in my garden and then when they sprout I'll check out the base.
Thanks for all the tips guys
Any tips for planting the print: depth, place etc...

Don't Amanita Caesarea have off white-light yellow gills, stems and flesh?

Amanita caesarea has not yet been found in Britain Mitchnast.
I'm pretty sure it is Amanita muscaria, the color is just a bit faded due to the pigment being washed off the cap.
Just to be on the safe side though, wait until you pick some more specimens but this time pick them in their entirety.

Amanita muscaria forms a symbiotic relationship with pine and beech so unless you've got those trees in your garden your out of luck.

It won't work. Amanita muscaria only grow with Pine and Birch trees.

i thought britain had the red variety of A. muscaria. these mushrooms look like something more like (if muscaria at all) Amanita muscaria var. persicina
also
"feels like it has a soft outer layer of fleshy skin that isn't fully attached, when I first picked them, this skin stuck to my fingers"
sounds like a volval cup.
other possibilities just from the pics and description
Amanita parcivolvata Amanita wellsii Amanita xanthocephala Amanita rubrovolvata
to name a few. any of those occur in britain?

Amanita Parcivolvata:
"Volva sack-like in some species, in others clamped tightly to the stem, leaving traces in bands of color on the stalk."
This is a very good description of what I was trying to describe but I can't find out if Amanita Parcivolvata grows in Britain.
Thanks for the info.

Amanita mycelia needs to mature for two full years after germination before fruit bodies are able to form... ::

As far as I'm aware none of the above are found in the UK.
I'll try and verify this with a mycologist I know at a nearby University.
He's a busy guy though, not promising anything...
