Last respects...
    #4626394 - 09/06/05 04:56 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Does not attending the funeral of an elderly family member constitute some sort of betrayal? Given that you've come to terms with that person, in person a week before they died and actually feel relief that they are gone because of their suffering in this world and are at peace with their passing? Not to mention the fact that attending the funeral would require traveling to another state and cause considerable financial and logistical difficulties that you know they wouldn't want you to go through.

Is attending the ceremony nessessary to show respect or is it just a moral obligation imposed by society if you already feel at peace with the circumstances? Is it primarily for the survivor's comfort and detriment if you were not to attend?

Out of peace or out of hard feelings. Was there nothing left to be communicated between you because everything had been taken care of in life?

Edit for edit: LOL!!

Pretty close to that. She was a stranger to me. Besides, funerals are boring.

Obligation imposed by society.

After the neurotransmitters stop firing, all that is left is a flesh husk.

A funeral is for the living, and not the dead.

Most humans, and many mamals, do better with some closure.

I would like that latter quote on my headstone, to help put things into perspective for any weeping passerbys.

I used to think that Pink Floyd said it best:

Now I'm not so sure...
