Paying your respects
    #2780920 - 06/10/04 11:34 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Like most popular rituals, I just don't get it. Yes, I understand being with family during the passing of a loved one for mutual emotional support, but why would hundreds of thousands go to look at Reagan's coffin, even if they felt warmly about the man?

Most of those people are probably religious, yet the soul, if it even exists, is no longer in the decaying corpse. So do people go just for the pageantry or what?

Hell, burying a body probably started for the purpose of keeping it away from predators and for hygenic reasons, not because of any after-life beliefs.

Reagan specifically:
That funeral resembled a soap opera. I'm sure many people cared for Reagan, but they're blowing it out of proportion so that they can add another tool in their political tackle-box. Similiar to how they are using the deaths of 9/11 to fuel the War on Common-nouns.

As far as the ritual: I can understand wanting to see the face of a deceased person one last time, though in the end it is a very pointless ritual that ends up just wasting a lot of space. I could think of better and more productive uses for corpses :\

Personally, I want to be cremated once my body becomes useless.

World Hunger is the question.

I'll take a pound of some ground Chuck, myself.
Mmmmm...smells like bacon.

hehe, i said the same thing to my father. what the thing called reagan was is gone. its like paying respects to a hat or a sock. its one thing to go to a funeral, but to parade around the country is a little weird to me.

paying respects is meant for the living.

if you can't find the truth right where you are, where else do you expect to find it?

this is the purpose
