Monkey apes temple rituals:- Balasore (Orissa) | May 25, 2005 7:44:06 PM IST Balasore (Orissa), May 25 : Aping Hindu rituals to a T, a monkey appeared at an Orissa temple, prayed for an hour folding its hands in the traditional sign of respect, took prasad, put vermilion on its forehead - and then fled.
Looking at it as a miracle are residents of Junia village in Balasore district, who responded by worshipping it in turn and garlanding the simian before it ran away.
It all happened earlier this week Monday when the simian, who had never been seen in the area earlier, appeared at about 10 a.m. near a Shiva temple and offered flowers at the shrine.
It was the day that devotees were formally inaugurating the stone symbol that is seen to represent Lord Shiva.
Said Aniruddha Behera, a village resident: "The monkey folded his hands, observed silence, put vermilion on his forehead and also took the prasad from the devotees."
"When we saw the monkey joining us we were surprised. We did not try to drive it out and it continued praying for nearly an hour amid hundreds of devotees," Behera told IANS.
It stayed around till evening when it ran into the nearby forests.
"We have not seen any monkey around for the last two years. This is a miracle for us," Behera said.

I would want to see a video for sure before even considering this as anything but a hoax, and a scam for attention.

IF true, that is something to ponder.

A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

That's the basis behind human spirituality, isn't it?
If it is, then spirituality is useless copying, but if humans indeed have spirituality and philosophy beyond simply "Monkey see, monkey do," then why do you assume close genetic relatives of us don't?

You'd think if "thousands" of people saw this, then one of them would have had a video cam in hand and filmed it.
But no, oh darn. Maybe next miricle.

The source of the story is a local newspaper, not a tabloid. So I figure it happened. Interpretation is up to you. The monkey ate some of the ritual food, which is understandable. The rest of what happened is very unusual indeed...

What are you all making a big deal out of it? Can't a monkey pray without getting too much attention?

oh come on, mister trusty trustless, must I have a video proof for everything I tell you?
I just had a glass of ice tea, do you believe that? Where is the good old human relationship with love and trust?
p.s. as for the monkey, probably a case of social learning, he was just immitating what people do

Yes, I think he was.
But what would possess a monkey to leave his pack, and do what the humans were doing, including certain ritualistic parts? Monkeys are very social beasts, and this praying loner is very, very odd.

well, he probably was currious with lights and souns so he visited inhabited parts and watched every day what they were doing until getting enoigh courage to come out, and then he just did what everyone else were doing all these days
Or maybe he just came to pray for more bannanas this year

The source of the story is a local newspaper, not a tabloid.
But the reporter didn't have a camera? None of the thousands present had a camera-equipped cell phone? There weren't any tourists present with a camcorder?
There must have been a UFO landing nearby. This is the only plausible explanation for the lack of photographic evidence.
