Rituals.

Do any of you practice spiritual rituals? Like prayer, meditation.

Can you guys name others?

I watched a video called Shortcut to Nirvana and it was all about rituals of the hindus and buddhists. A japanese lady was buried underneath the sand for three days. A man had nails on his flip flops and sat on a bed of nails. Others chanted.

There are a supposed 30-50million people that gather in India for spiritual outings.

Do you do any rituals?

I put sand in my flip-flops and stare at the ocean...greatest ritual ever.  :bow:

I recite a refuge prayer and the bodhisattva vows before and after meditation.  That is a form of ritual.

Other than that I have no real rituals to speak of...Ritual can easily be put on auto-pilot, but having no rituals can lead to a lot of imbalance.  Whether you're into rituals or not, the only important thing is acting with the heart-mind fully engaged, and unattached to the outcome of the action.  There is only ever this next breath you take, whether you're doing deep pranayama practice or running around naked in the woods. :tongue:

As a (not very practicing) Bodhisattva of the Mahayana we are prohibited from becoming too attached to any ritual. I believe it's in the Bodhisattvavatara. I hold to that. But I still meditate daily and I guess that's a ritual. But I try not to make it too formal to keep it loose. Fitting but loose.

I think I was nuts until I started doing that.  I used to be in the office while I was still in the shower.  I used to be getting ready for work while I was still falling asleep.  I used to be hanging out with my friends while I was still at work.  I used to be responding to someone while they were still talking.  That's insane.

Especially the 'Assembling of the Work-Bag'. I've felt sometimes that mine mistaking cellular phones or keys and having to make a return trip and then realizing the wallet is not on my person when returning to the car... seems to be in an overactive mindset thinking about things not currently pertinent.

Getting prepared for work is truly a work of mediation; also school/court/vacation/anything you can do really...

Analysis isn't really a part of it.  I've narrated it as if there is a lot of thinking involved, but there isn't.  My aim is to keep my attention on whatever I am doing, I don't analyze it as I act.  Since I wasn't doing it at the time that I wrote up my post, I could only reflect and describe.  While I'm in the middle of it, thoughts do arise from time to time, but when they do they are relevant.

I think I'm going to give it a try, being more aware of what I'm doing and drop the head games as much as possible.  I tend to do this some already, but your approach seems more deliberate, and I like it for that.  I'd imagine it becomes natural after a while, does it not?

I have absolutely no rituals what so ever. I pretty much charge aimlessly through my life.

I adored your list of rituals and how you described each as if they were done by whisky clones for the last 5000 years and that tradition has kept your people alive.

but I must say that I am still in the shower and at work yesterday and driving and in bed and talking on the terrace, and I am typing this note and smiling for both the separation of things and the connection of things.

Yes, it just takes consistent attention, even after it becomes a habit.  The mind wanders so quickly, especially during easy and familiar tasks.  Luckily these regular, mundane activities are the best places to establish the habit of mindfulness.  They serve as little reminders; every time I open the car door (or any door now) I am reminded to pay attention to what I am doing, what my body is doing.  Every time I sit down anywhere, wait in a line, answer the phone, I remember to be mindful.  Just start with one thing though.

The biggest obstacle was figuring out how to make myself suddenly mindful when I notice I've become distracted.  If I just think "whoa I should pay attention" then all I'm doing is thinking about paying attention and I'm quickly lost again.  What I do now is just shift my attention into my body.  What does it physically feel like to be in this moment?  The senses tie you to the moment, the mind usually takes you away.
