Casing Overlay with Amazonians???

My friend has made two casings of P.C. Amazonians. He put them in an incubator right after casing for a few days and has now put them in his growth chamber. It appears as though both casings have mycelium overlaying the top layer. Is this normal? Should my friend put another casing layer over the mycelium and then deep scratch? The mycelium is growing vigorously and seems to consume the top layer of casing material. What do you guys think?

Hard to say without a picture. Has the mycelia formed an impenatrable mat? This is overlay.

what did you case them with and what substrate is this on? maybe the temp is too warm? about 70 to 75 should be good once you can see the mycellia.

Case#1 was made from three jars of Finch seed substrate, cased with 50/50+ (Jiffy Mix & Oyster Shell) (Casing layer is completely covered.)
Case#2 was made from three jars of Rye/Millet substrate, cased with Jiffy Mix, Oyster shells, and Manure. (This one is not 100% covered yet but it's still growing.)
They were in an incubator for 4 days at 84*F covered with foil. Now the casings are in a growth chamber at room temperature (~75*F)
I'll post pics soon.

well if its got overlay in 4 days the casing may be too thin, try about 1/2" or else you should have put them in room temp even sooner than 4 days once you saw it popping up thru. try patching the heavier areas with a new light casing and keep it at the lower temp but if its not completely overcoilonized than you should be ok.

OK, scratch both casings. Take a knife and make XXXX patterns across the top, right down to the mycelia. Don't add nothing.

Yeah, I think the casing layer was initially too thin and probably left them in the incubator too long. The damned casing tek I used said to incubate them for a week then initiate pinning.
Stupid me! Hell, it's my first time I'm allowed to fuck up a little. 8^)
Well, guess I've got to pressure cook some more substrate. Got to save my babies!

Ok, I finally got the pics of the Overlay my friend was experiencing. Take a look and let me know what you guys think.

That is very close to overlay...
If you really want to try to fruit it w/o deep scratching, I would recommend cold shocking that bad boy now! First spray the mycelium down with a fine spray then leave it in the fridge 12-16 hours(covered with plastic wrap and aluminum foil).
There's still a chance that you will need to deep scratch it though if it grows more mycelium on the top and doesn't pin immediately.
What strain is that?

holy fucking overlay. damn. a word of advise; next time give it light and put in your terrarium WAY sooner. im gonna take a stab in the dark here and say maybe just add a thin (<1/4") casing and put it in your terrarium. maybe try scratching lightly first then put on a casing. looks like fruiting off that as it stands would be fairly difficult.

Well, the casings were scratched and have started growing back nicely. A very thin layer of casing layer was added after the scratchings. The mycelium is growing again and looks much healthier than before. Hyphal knots appear to be forming. They were definetly left in the incubator too long but after the scratching both casings have really bounced back and hopefully pins will be forming in a few days. I'll post pics of what they look like after the scratching next week. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
