Illness as a rehearsal for death?
    #4599744 - 08/30/05 04:28 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

In Stephen Levine's book A Year to Live, he recommends that we use our minor illnesses as opportunities to practice for death.

After being very ill for four days, I have come to the conclusion that I am not at all ready to die well.

I was miserable, depressed, and did nothing but watch DVD's and feel sorry for myself.

Guess I need more practice.

You mean ideally? The ego begins to relinquish its grip on preserving the self, and you begin to define yourself more as a spiritual being having a physical experience.

No, I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, so I need to eat really heathful foods or else I suffer excruciating stomach pains for 3-4 days, throw up anything I (foolishly) try to eat, and generally feel miserable and near death.

I hear that is rough. Aren't there some naturopathic "cures" for that?

he recommends that we use our minor illnesses as opportunities to practice for death.

Do we need to practice? Every single creature gets it "right".

Speaking of practice, what's up with doctors practicing medicine? Shouldn't they already have that down?

So MacDonalds is out of the question?

Pointing out logical falacies, contradictions, alternative explanations, and downright errors is being a dick? Hmm...

If someone was ripping you off and I showed you how, would you consider me a friend or an asshole?

As long as your agreeing with me, I'm cool with it.

I am not at all ready to die well

My mom used to tell me to work on improving the things I can change, and learn to accept the things I cannot.

Good advice. Your energies are wasted worrying about death; direct them toward life and you'll get more mileage.

Dunno if that helps any, but I wish you the best.

You are not ready to die because you are full of life. Being ready to die is not the optimal condition. Being ready to live is.
