I can relate. I know what its like to be without power for days and even weeks as a result of those storms. It just sucks. It feels dehumanizing as if electrical power is a basic human dignity right.

We go camping and it's cool , but in your home, it's all together different.

Maybe the first night living by candlelight is cozy but by day two when you want a hot shower and cold drink it just sucks. from a distance you think, oh just use ice. What if the stores are damaged closed or open but have no ice. Do you know what it feels like to spend 5 hours hunting down and waiting in line for a bag of ice? Pathetic! Eww. You think, "why not just fly out of the area?' What if the airport is damaged closed? You think, "just drive out". Can't if your on an Island or the roads are covered with downed poles and trees.

being trapped like a rat is also a dehumanizing feeling.

And being where all the eye can see is nothing but destruction makes you feel like you are in a war zone. A very violated feeling. Like mother nature raped you up the ass and moved on.

We take so much for granted in our homes like AC, the fridge, microwave/oven/stove, TV, stereo, lights, computer, HOT showers, and digital alarm clocks that to loose it all in one feel swoop is disorienting and makes you feel like a disaster refugee. Just awful.

To feel like someone who couldn't afford to pay the electric bill is a yucky feeling, especially when you can. You start to realize where you don't have control.

Ahhhh but then you realize, you do have options to regain control......enter the generator! :evil: We can power the whole house with that puppy.

And God said, "let there be light".

Seriously, I feel for them, it sucks.

As I said, no one forces anyone to live in a hurricane zone. We take our chances and deal with it and life goes on. :sun:

Thanks! I worked all day on the yard and pool. No house damage. Next door neighbor came over to say that he knows that he is responsible for the fence and sprinkler system damage to my yard. His insurance man is coming over Tuesday night, we notified our insurance company to give them a heads-up.

Helped my neighbor across the street board up a shattered picture window. Her husband bailed on her this year when she was going through her 3rd bout with cancer! She's doing OK, but I do minor plumbing (no pun intended this time) masonry & carpentry work for her on occasion.

The storm made landfall about 1/2 mile from our house. It is a miracle that we all have electricity! I am so-o-o-o grateful. It is so humid down here that just being outside for 5 minutes and one is running with perspiration. I've been working and drinking water but I sweat so much that I didn't have to pee for half the day! Whew! Had a hot & cold shower, and a St. Pauli Girl Dark  :thumbup:

Sorry g., I didn't mean that all 75 feet was destroyed, but the fence is there practically for appearance because it is so old and rickety. It can't be patched, to drill it, it crumbles! I was going to rebuild it, and two side gates, but it's such a production. Gotta keep the little kids who play on the golf course away from the pool!

I'm glad you're alright, Markos, fence not withstanding.

I faired better than my neighbors. I just lost some landscaping; others had trees fall on structures causing damage. We've been witout power since early Saturday morning when the peak winds passed. Flicker Power and Light says it could be Tuesday before we're restored. I'm hoping it will be sooner. Strangely, DSL and cell phones have been working without a glitch.

Now I'm reading the long range forecast says the storm is intensifying and some models put it at category 4 when it makes landfall again. The people in her way next are in for a bad time.  :frown:

Thanks for the well-wishes Diploid. Katrina made landfall around Hallendale Beach Blvd., just north of Aventura and that's about 1/2 mile north and 3 miles east of our home. Oddly, our electric went off a dozen or so times, but only for 30 seconds! It has been a blessing to have A/C in this hot, wet air. Sorry about your loss of power. The Oakwood Home Depot was running on backup power today - registers and minimal lighting, no A/C. I hope you've got people to 'chill' with in the meantime.

Hurricane Katrina Discussion Number 18

Statement as of 5:00 PM EDT on August 27, 2005

reports from Air Force Reserve and NOAA hurricane hunter aircraft... as well as the Key West WSR-88D...show that Katrina is still in a concentric eyewall cycle with the inner eyewall 9 N mi wide and the outer 45-50 N mi wide. The central pressure has risen as high as 950 mb...with the latest central pressure at 945 mb. The aircraft have found flight-level winds as high as 119 kt at 8000 ft in the outer eyewall...although measurements from the NOAA stepped frequency microwave radiometer suggest the surface winds in this area are still less than 100 kt. The initial intensity remains at 100 kt for this advisory.

The initial motion remains 275/6. Katrina is south of a deep-layer ridge over the northern Gulf Coast. This ridge is forecast to weaken as a strong deep-layer trough develops over the central united States...and a new deep-layer ridge forms over the Florida Peninsula and the adjacent Atlantic. This pattern change should cause Katrina to turn northward during the next 72 hr and make landfall over the northern Gulf Coast. Track guidance remains in agreement with this scenario...although the GFS and GFDL have led an overall shift to the west toward southeast Louisiana. This shift is not unanimous...however...as the UKMET has shifted to the east of its previous track. The new track is nudged just a little to the west of the previous track...along the west edge of the main cluster of guidance for the firs 24-36 hr and down the middle of that cluster thereafter. The track calls for landfall in southeast Louisiana in a little under 48 hr.

Katrina should strengthen as it comes out of the concentric eyewall cycle. The GFDL is now calling for a peak intensity of 131 kt... while the SHIPS model is calling for 130 kt and the FSU superensemble 128 kt . The intensity forecast will call for strengthening to 125 kt (144 miles per hour) at landfall...and there remains a chance that Katrina could become a category five hurricane before landfall. There remains the possibility of another concentric eyewall cycle before landfall...which could throw off the intensity forecast a bit.

The new forecast track and wind radii require a Hurricane Watch for and expanded portions of the northern Gulf Coast at this time. Hurricane warnings will likely be required later tonight for parts of the watch area.

As terrible as it is, it could always be worse. I survived Hurricane Camille back in '69- she hit the Ms Gulf Coast at maximum strength with sustained winds of at least 200 mph! (Possibly higher, but the wind recorded instruments were obliterated). Camille was the most extreme meterological event in the history of the United States. She had the highest recorded storm surge (over 25 feet). She killed 143 people in my home state and changed our lives forever. My father was in the National Guard at the time and he helped pull bodies out of trees.

I'm afraid that with global warming we may see her like again. You think things are bad now, it could be much, much worse.

Don't take chances man.

I was born in Miami and have lived in south Florida for 40 years. Still, this storm surprised me. It was category 1 when we met and looks to be a 4 or 5 when it makes landfall again. There is a world of difference between a category 1 and a 5.  :frown:

By the way, while global warming contributes to the strength of these storms, the primary reason we're seeing an upward trend in both frequency and magnitude is due to a poorly-understood oscillation of sea surface temperatures called the Atlantic Multidecadal Mode. The period of this oscillation is on the order of several decades. This is why hurricane seasons of the past 30 years or so have been fairly quiet. We're now starting a new ~30 year cycle of increased hurricane activity.

The Atlantic ocean is like a gigantic battery. Changing the temperature of by even one degree C takes a staggering amount of energy. That energy circulates in giant currents along the bottom of the ocean over the years and eventually makes its way back out to feed storms.

There is currently no well-supported theory to explain this and several attempts to model the phenomenon mathematically using supercomputers have failed to yield much useful data.

Statement as of 11:00 am EDT on August 28, 2005

The Air Force hurricane hunters just measured a 166 kt flight levelwind in the northeast eyewall...which requires an additional upward adjustment of the current intensity to 150 kt. A drop in the eye gave a central pressure of 907 mb. Katrina is comparable in intensity to hurricane Camille of 1969...only larger. GPS dropsonde data from the NOAA G-IV mission earlier today showed Katrina's intense cyclonic circulation extending through the 200 mb level...with the flow spiraling anticylonically outward in a well-developed upper-level outflow pattern beyond a couple hundred N mi from the center. Fluctuations in strength...due to internal structural changes...are likely prior to landfall. Hurricanes rarely sustain such extreme winds for much time. However we see no obvious large-scale effects to cause a substantial weakening the system...and it is expected that the hurricane will be of category
4 or 5 intensity when it reaches the coast.

There is no change to the track forecast. Katrina should gradually turn toward the north...into a weakness in the subtropical ridge associated with a large mid-latitude cyclone over the northern United States and southern Canada. The official forecast track is about in the middle of the dynamical guidance models...which are rather tightly clustered. Recalling that the average NHC 24-hour track forecast error is about 80 N mi...the actual landfall point
could still be anywhere from southeastern Louisiana to the Mississippi coast. Also...we must continue to stress that the hurricane is not just a point on the map...because destructive winds...torrential rains...storm surge...and dangerous waves extend well away from the eye. It is impossible to specify which County or Parish will experience the worst weather.

This advisory shows an additional expansion of the wind field over the eastern semicircle based on aircraft and surface observations. Hurricane force winds are forecast to spread at least 150 N mi inland along the path of Katrina. Consult inland warnings issued by National Weather Service forecast offices.

Don't worry- no one who lived through Camille will ever forget it and we always take any hurricane seriously. But there are some foolish people who won't heed the warnings. Darwinian evolution in action I guess.

I am very worried about the fair city of New Orleans. She'll be under water for months if the worst case scenario comes to pass.
