Many reasons for masturbation. The obvious lack of a partner. But heres a big one; self love, a chance to find out exactally what you like, to experience sensation in you body and to awaken it. In tantra solo practice is considered very important as you can focus on just experience without concerns of satisfying a partner.

Masturbation is just very pleasurable pissing. Could you be emotionally complete only pissing?

Seriously though, masturbation is just a natural process for me. It's nothing more than it is. I'm not going to give up sex because of masturbation, but masturbation is just there to relieve the tension that builds up over a day or two.

In high school I knew a guy who, inspired by The Mothers of Invention song 'Call Any Vegetable [and that vegetable will respond to you],' spent time at Rutgers University masturbating with vegetables. Of course, he used fruit too - mostly melons out of which he would carve vaginas. The usual thing (I actually saw a discarded one in the trash) was to use a long icecream soda spoon to carve the seeds out of a cucumber, pierce a little hole at the far end (otherwise, he explained, the air pressure would blow it up), run hot water through the middle, insert penis, and go at it! He would place it between pillows and hump it!

He also would stretch a rubber glove over a glass of hot water fingers in the water, fasten it with rubber bands, put vaseline in the thumb, insert penis and masturbate.

Do any of these machinations sound romantic to anyone yet? Not only is masturbation anything more than a clinical release of sexual tension, but sex qua sex does not teach anyone anyhting, facilitate any emotional or psychological growth (individuation), or have anything intrinsically spiritual about it (as holy matrimony or tantra does) other than as a way to avoid casual sex.

I'm not dissing or dismissing jacking-off, but addiction to pornography or preferring autoerotic behavior to sex with a loving partner does indicate psychological problems.

After 19 years of marriage I don't really worry about it anymore. It is a non-issue. I do not consider it spiritual anymore than any other bodily function which is what it is. I also agree that pornography has a negative effect on the psyche. Garbage in garbage out.

One of the first lessons in Tantra is learning self love with masturbation. You can make love to yourself instead of just jacking off. That's what this post was about. Very few see masturbation as more than tension release or some mild perversion. I was wondering if anyone saw a higher purpose possible within it. Not everyone has access to a sexual partner or even wants one. Does this leave the spiritual aspects of sex out of their reach?

yeah well i consider sex and affection the way to happiness, and masturbation doesn't do it for me. The question was whether masturbation can bring happiness and I said no.

Pornography is not good or bad. It all depends on how you use it. Some people get excited and passionate watching people engage in lovemaking. Just a preference, like having sex in different positions, orifices, or other sexual preferences.
