I wonder if anyone ever double-checked the Mayan calendar to make absolute certain the 12/21/12 date is correct for the end of the Long Count. What if it were off by a few years and say 2003 was the end of the calendar?

I think talk of the pole shift began with the whole zetatalk thing. They had a lot of people convinced that it was going to happen back in 2003. When that didn't happen I guess people bumped it forward to 2012.

There is a lot of hype about that year though. Surely it isn't all due to Mckenna?

yea sorry, it takes a really long time for the poles to flip, they switch slowly, im pretty sure were all gona be dead before the poles flip far enough to kill us

and yes, our atmosphere would be fucked up, the uv rays would kill almost everything except the smallest of bacteria, i believe... starting the process of evolution over yet again

this is what ive heard at least, correct me if i am wrong

I think there are worries about crazy powerful seismic shifts when the poles switch. It might have just been scifi but I read somewhere that the continents might shift at a crazy rate and maybe even alter our gravity?

Although geology has taught me that there is evidence in the rock that the poles have flipped before, I am not, in no way, convinced that they are ' scheduled ' to do so again at that time.

I don't recall exacly, but I'm under the impression that the magnetite orientation observed in the rock, during pole shift episodes, indicated an instantaneous magnetic shift.

Then again, when looking at rocks, especially at ' instantaneous ' things, you have to remember that it is in terms of geological time...

That means, it could have taken a while to happen.


Perhaps the poles travelled along the planet to their opposing original orientations, instead of simply flipping like a light switch.

It takes ~5000 years for the reversal to complete.

What causes the field is not known, but the leading theory is that it's caused by magneto-hydrodynamics. Electric currents in the Earth's molten interior propagate through iron and other conductive elements. As differences in the temperature of the liquid develop, convection occurs, and as the fluid moves, the Earth's rotation induces Coriolis. These two effects are also observed in our atmosphere.

As these fluid masses move in giant curved paths, they induce and reinforce each other's fields and induce additional current. The net result of all these vectors is what we observe on the surface as a (mostly) stable magnetosphere. This all happens on geologic time scales because the masses of fluid involved are significant fractions of the Earth's mass and larger than continents.

The effect was the premise for the propulsion system of the ballistic missile submarine Red October in Tom Clancy's famous book. Unfortunately, the effect is impractical to use in real-world propulsion systems.

The field reversal has been more or less reproduced in the laboratory using large vats of molten lead in rotating drums. It has also been more or less confirmed by supercomputers running mathematical models of the Earth's interior in the field of fluid dynamics. It's these confirmations of the theory from practical and mathematical models that give it credence.

I have been hearing off and on and occaisionally reading about this for almost 2 years now and I'm not sure what to think. It sounds lazy but I probably won't start giving it tons of thought until a few years pass.... if I'm/we're still here. All I know is, "I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to."
