The alignment occurs when the winter solstice sun conjuncts the crossing point of Milky Way and ecliptic in Sagittarius. This crossing point is where the "dark rift" in the Milky Way is, which was known to the ancient Maya as xibalba be (the Road to the Underworld) or simply "the Black Road."

I just read that on some site.Shit sounds creepy.

many experiments and models have been setup to show how things are accelerating, and seem to sort of do something really crazy , right at around 2012-2050.

I've never heard of these experiments. Got any links?

The world is not going to end in 2012. Nor will there be any 'awakening' or great cosmic phenomenon. The Mayan calendar is just that. It's a calendar. I'll relate it to our Gregorian calendar that we use today very loosely but only to show that it doesn't predict the future.

Our calender is 12 months long, then we start back at the beginning again. It represents one earth cycle around the sun. After we reach our end date (Dec 31), we tack on another year and start back at January 1st again.

The Mayan calendar is 5,125.36 years long then it starts back at the beginning again. This is the beginning of the new 13 baktun calendar or "Great Cycle" as the Mayans called it. There are 65 baktuns in the "Galactic Cycle" as I've come to call it which is made of up 5 "Great Cycles". If you divide 26,000 years(roughly the amount of time it takes for the sun to come back into alignment with the galactic center again) by 5125.36, you get the number 5. Well, not exactly 5 but the time period of 26,000 years is only a rough estimate so 5 will do. For those of you inclined, the long number is 5.074823197.

Many of you are quick to form conspiracy theories over mere coincidences, so what do you make of the fact that there are almost exactly 5 'Great Cycles' within this time period? The time it takes the sun to complete it's galactic cycle is almost exactly 65 baktuns.

No one argues that the Mayans weren't great astronomers. They truly were. But the 'end' of the Mayan calendar holds no prognostic innuendos. It is simply the ending of one cycle and the beginning of another. We experience these cycles in our everyday life. The sun rises and it sets and there is a new day. The moon gains width in it's reflection of the sun's light then vanishes from sight again in the night sky, and we celebrate a new month. Our earth spins her cosmic web around the sun in 360 degrees of un-earthly splendor and so we have a new year.

These things come and go, many of them unnoticed. It is only when something rare (relatively speaking) occurs, such as the ending of a 65 baktun cycle that we start to fear the unknown. These things don't happen everyday. In fact, the event that will occur on Dec. 12, 2012 hasn't ever occured in written human history. It last happened, roughly 25,992 years ago. This fact, however, doesn't make it any more significant than the sun that will surely rise in the morning. The only significance it holds is that which we as observers place upon this event.

does anybody else believe the predicted date for the transition between epochs? it's only eight years away and we are running out of time. do you think it will be the "end" of the world as we know it, or will it usher in an age of peace and prospertity? here's some links with some info for those unfamiliar http://www.greatdreams.com/2012.htm

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

You nailed it on the head my friend. This is not the end of the world. The end of the world for religions maybe. But certainly not the end of the world.. not even close. If anything, it's the start of a new cycle.

Perhaps religions will fade away as we all discover that we are all god, and we can have a direct connection to god at all times. Then what need will you have for the church aka the 'middle man'/lie spreaders. I'll watch as all religions disintegrate and everyone just comes together to recognize that we are all humans of earth.. to celebrate life and diversity.. and we can all live together in peace under one religion.. the way of life on earth.. living in harmony with nature and your fellow man.. evolving mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually.. There is no true religion only what you believe, and every reality is just as valid as every other reality, because they are based on experience. There is no one true reality.. that is the beauty of physical life.. you are still connected to the source of oneness.. but you are unaware of it.. and the illusion of separation is quite real.. therefore you perceive reality in a subjective manner, but in the end when you return to oneness.. your subjective experiences are absorbed by the collective and it becomes part of evolution.

enough babble.
spread forth my children, and distribute peace love and understanding wherever you go. Show compassion and tolerance to even your enemies and help other humans evolve as you evolve. All that we can do now is come together as a species. Unite the planet. It's not the easiest task in the world, but it can be done, and it starts within.

There have been doomsday prophecies in every culture during every generation. Out of all of them so far, 0 have been correct.  I'm no master when it comes to statistics, i'd say the odds are with us.  Although i did hear within the last month that some tibetan-monks had a vision of elevated war until 2012 and than world catastrophy.  It will be interesting to see what happens, but i will in no way change my life in light of any of this. :sun:
