2012 is the end of the mayan calendar and the magnetic poles are scheduled to flip, they have already decreased a ridiculous amount and are approaching zero... what are the effects of zero magnetism on the human body? anybody know how long this process would take? since the poles are always in movement i would assume they could never be exactly zero, but numbers approaching zero then numbers going away from zero with zero just being passed for a fraction of a second... any ideas?

december 21st 2012 is the end of the long count, just type it into google it has tons of info on it

If the earth's magnetic poles were to reverse, well...  we'd probably be pretty screwed.

Once the magnetic field disappears, the earth would get cooked by solar radiation.  This would have widespread effects on climate and possibly burn off the atmosphere.  The magnetic field would reappear -reversed- though, but that could take anywhere from a few weeks to a few thousand years.

I'm not too sure how this got associated with the whole 2012 mayan calendar deal though  :shrug:

just type in "sun spots earth magnetism" in google and read how the earths magnetism is rapidly approaching zero and sunspots (created by magnetism) have been at an all time high in size and frequency

TB makes up science to support delusion. :confused:

The Earth's magnetic poles change direction on average once every several hundred thousand or so years. We're currently in the process of another cycle which will be complete in about 3000 years.

That's the year 5005, not 2012, for those without a calculator.

None at all according to the astronauts who spent several days outside the Earth's magnetic field on their way to the moon and back. And by the way, your toaster causes a stronger local magnetic field than the Earth does.

Don't believe me? Put one next to a compass and observe it drastically overwhelm the Earth.

I've heard about 2012 and timewave zero and all that jazz, but never about the magnetic poles switching then. They have been headed towards a switch for thousands upon thousands of years, but I'm pretty sure they aren't going to switch then. I think we still have a few thousand years to go.

Come to think of it, I heard something about some field of the earth changing frequency, which is equally implausible.

More realistically, the Earth will enter an unusual part of the solar system/galaxy. There will probably be absolutely no physically noticable ramifications, though it is rumored that the karmic cycle will stop and restart.
