Consumerism
    #4418169 -

Lately I've been feeling like everything I've been taught boils down
to one thing and one thing only: consume.

Is your penis too small? Buy a Ferrari.
Are you feeling down? Eat some ice cream.
Still feeling down? Eat some pills.
Bored? Buy a movie ticket.
Too poor to afford all this bullshit? Get a shit job peddling it to others.

What do you guys think? Is there more to society than mindless
consumption? If there is, how can I find it?

If this is a repeat topic, I apologize.

Whatever society's goals may be, they do not have to be yours. If you don't like the way things are,  I can agree with you.  I would prefer it if we humans treated each other in more co-operative ways then competitive ones.  I can't change society, but I do have a choice on how much I participate in the things I don't agree with. And I can choose to be someone who doesn't need to consume to be happy.

mass influencing is the domain of regimes of power, and they have always used advertising. who else can afford to broadcast like that?

partly it is subverted into commercial productization style consumerism, but what we consume mostly is the advertising feed itself - the medium is the message.

we love it
billboards
noise TV
parties concerts bull fights
baseball
decorated public buildings.
we have always wanted to "eat" our social environment in this way.

Everyone's selling something, even if there's no price tag on it.

yes ,
everyone is trying to present their story and be loved maybe.

some have been twisted into selling or needing to sell, and got it all wrapped into one big nightmare of wanting to be loved and selling something at the same time.

meantime we love the parade - the posters the carnival, and that is what supports it - good and bad.

It is pretty disturbing how deeply rooted in our society consumerism is. I'm by no means trying to justify it here, but rather trying to explain why it is so, IMO at least. It arises from 2 things, the base primate impulse to survive, and the desire to create and learn new things.
All of the technology that science has created has in turn led into creating more and more elaborate gadgets, some are useful(handheld gps has saved several friends of mine while bushwhacking through the mountains) and most is gimmicky. While it may seem that all of the pure science research is noble at the time, it tends to end up being turned into rather useless and gimmicky products in the long run. In this sense the mindless consumerism drives the technology machine, which in turn keeps churning out more and more gimmicky and exciting products to dazzle us and keep our minds occupied while we continue to shell out money.
Also, from the survival standpoint, it is necessary to sell in order to survive in a society which is based on this consumer-centric philosophy. It has gotten to the point where it is almost completely impossible for us to function as individuals without embracing the safety net society has provided for us. If you can think of a livable and ethical way to make money without selling something, I'd love to hear it. Even if you are an artist, you can't live without selling your art can you?

hungry? eat some food
thirsty? drink some water?
horny? get some pussy.

yes youve discovered the underlying truth to all human life! that actions predicate desires. Now, all you have to do is resolve the fact that when a civilization reaches a certain population level, it requires a sophisticated economic system in order to keep itself balanced and functional.

It has gotten to the point that being in favor of consumerism is a radical position.

It seems that the very term "consumerism" was invented to be used with disgust.

Is it really as bad as you've been told?
