Cheap, automated monster terrarium idea with pics

Here is a project I have going at the moment. I would appreciate any comments/suggestions from some of you experts here. I will also be more than happy to help any newbies who want to grow tons of fun-guys, but take my advice with a grain of salt... I am a fucking retard ;) ...having said that, let's begin shall we. FOAF's objective was to construct a huge terrarium that could be fully automated (He leaves town alot) with a mininmal amount of overhead. He got sick and tired of dealing with 10 different rubbermaid containers and fanning and misting and yadda yadda yadda. The hobby was begining to consume him, and his yields in the past were pathetic. He also lives in a basement, and has bad problems with trich, so he needed something sterile. While browsing the isles of Wal-Mart yesterday, he got some ideas. First he bought a 5 shelf unit for about 15 bucks. He thought the shelf system was great because the shelves themselves allowed for free air flow with their numerous holes. Observe picture 1 ...Ignore the pathetic casing. It had just survived a major trich operation. As you can see, the holes in the shelf allow for air movement within the system. Next he needed to isolate the shelf system from the nasties living in his basement (cobweb and trich). He did this using 4 mil thick plastic sheeting attached with good ole duct tape. It allows light in but keeps contams out. Observe picture 2 Again, ignore the fact that the shelves are being used to hold the sterlite containers at this point. This is only because FOAF is working to complete the project. Soon enough, the entire shelf unit will be one huge terrarium, and the containers will be useless. Notice the HEPA filter at the bottom, this will come into play soon. Now, once the shelf system is completley sealed with plastic sheeting, two issues need to be addressed. One is humidity, the other is air exchange. To keep the humidity high in the terrarium, FOAF picked up one of these at Wally world for 20 bucks.... Mind you, all of that dryer ducting tubing is just sitting there for now to give you the idea. FOAF's idea is two-fold concerning humidty. He wants humid air pumped into his terrarium, but he also wants clean, filtered air. His idea was to seal the cool mist in a leftover sterlite container, which, in turn, is fed air from a small HEPA filter (~$40). This clean, saturated air would then be pumped into the top of the terrarium via dryer ducting. The whole setup would be plugged into this 9 dollar bad boy timer... ...this timer allows for FOUR on/off setting per HOUR. This should be plenty to allow for humidity build up and subsequent CO2 evacuation (which is coming right up).

Here is a pic of the coolmist in the container...it fits perfect. Next, FOAF wanted his CO2 build up to be evacuated periodically. Stamets suggests 1-3 air exchanges per hour. To accomplish this, FOAF will by a cheap, smalll diameter desktop fan. He will then buy an approriate size sterlite container and cut the lid to fit the fan's diamter snugly. Since carbon dioxide is heavier than air, this box will be mounted on the lower shelf of the terrarium and filled with polyfill. It will then have holes cut in the bottom and exit out of the terrarium . This way, air can get out when the fan is on, but no unsterile air can enter when the fan is off. The fan will be hooked up to one of the same timers and set to power on in accordance with stamets suggestions and the power cycle of the cool mist. This is all FOAF has done for now. He will update the thread with more pics and info as he completes the project this week. Again, any and all criticisim, comments or questions are welcome. He just wants to give back to a community that has helped him in the past. Just a reminder, this post has been brought to you by... ....thanks again shroomery :)

Sweet!!!! It may be helpful to get two or three humidty/temperature gauges with a terrarium that tall as things may not distribute evenly.

I'd say run the cool mist 24/7 for something that size. Very nice work ;) But if you can then run the fan for half hour every hour.

I figured that would be WAY too long, but then again I don't have any experience with humidifiers before. I am afraid of too many water droplets forming, so I might use a pieced of plexi as a dripshield. How fast do those cool mists fill up and average size terrarium? Any other glaring oversights with this idea that anyone can spot?

Back with some updates... FOAF added a 10 dollar gro stick light, rich in the blue spectrum and mounted it on top shelf. FOAF added 4 * $2.00 wheels to make his terrarium mobile and easily concealable (more on that later..) FOAF mounted a 20 dollar 65 cfm fan (terrarium is 13.5 cubic feet) from radio shack in a sterlite container filled with polyfill. This is what the inside looks like now. Check out the pic below, the smoke from my cig gets sucked right out of the box. Looks to be good for air entrainment, but I'm no fucking McMan thank you very much ;) Here is the HEPA feed Cool Mist box... total coast 60 bucks. Here is what the back looks like now.. More updates to come, but only if someone lets me know they give a shit. Reply people!

Yeah, I think they just came out. I saw them in an old Maxim magazine if that helps. You gotta love Resevoir Dogs, I am sure there are other doggers here.

I must say man, that is a nice setup. Once my hippo gets things going a bit he is thinking of using your idea. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the feedback guys. To answer your questions, I just had a great idea tonight to buy the same 15 dollar shelf system and 3 hinges. The hinges would be attached to the side of the shelves, making them like one huge book if you can picture it. This crack will seal itself when closed, but removable duck tape will provide some extra insurance. To help explain my air intake/exhaust system.... Intake: HEPA Filter ----> Sealed dryer ducting ------> Sealed sterlite container containing Cool Mist ------> Sealed dryer ducting to top of terrarium. This should provide humidity and clean air all in one fell swoop. Exhaust: Radio shack fan mounted flush in lid of sterlite container ---> Polyfill stuffed container blocks nasties from coming in/ CO2 comes out In theory should work, I guess we will see. Any guesses?

I can't see why it wouldn't work, sounds like a hell of an idea, thanks for explaining...if this works i'll definatly be attempting the same thing. If you wouldn't mind could you list the prices for materials and possibly post a picture of the hinged door on the side so I could see exactly how you have it rigged up. thanks
