Why do some mushrooms contain Psilocybin/Psilocin?

Hi,
I have been troubled as to the reason why some mushrooms contain the afore mentioned chemicals...i mean why do the mushroom need them? Are they used to ward off animals...Didn't really work when humans stumbled across them! Surely they can't be put on the earth for our enjoyment only .
I would really appreciate any answers ne 1 might have, technical or otherwise on the subject.

hmmmm interesting, heh never really even cared. IMO its just a chemical like any other, this chemical happens to react with our serionin recepters, I highly doubt that it is a their defense mechanism. Also, I might ad, to support my theory, that not every living species is effect the same by chemicals. For example, some berries that are part of certain birds main source of nuritment is toxic to humans. The chemical that makes humans eyes water in onions, poisons dogs.....anyway good question...and thats my two cents!

Try a search...
Truth is, no one really knows why, people have their theories, perhaps, but we might never know... just be thankful they do contain psilocin. Perhaps they contain the chemicals as a way to encourage the spread of their species, if they didn't have them they would just be useless LBMs (they don't taste very good, etc.).

Got a question about a substance? Erowid might already have your answer! Have questions about the mushroom experience? The Tripper's FAQ may have your answer or someone else might have had your question before. I know up on the top you are seeing great sights, but down at the bottom we, too, should have rights.

Its mother earths way of helping mankind...
If enough of the mushrooms grow... and enough humans eat them...
Then we'll mend our ways and save the earth...
I like it anyway

i remember reading somewhere that they are by-products of the fungus' metabolism. i don't have a source or anything, however.

the above post sounds reasonable, if you put aside any spiritual implications. it would make sense because you can grow psilocybes the are more or less potent depending on the type of substances they grow on and how much nutrients they have.
