Dry Vs. Fresh Mushrooms 1

Is a fresh (meaning not yet dry) mushroom more potent than a dry mushroom of the same age. Basically, is the active chemical in the mushroom reduced through the drying process or is only water taken out? Does dehydrating remove any of the potency of the shrooms?
Thanks,

i've taken 15g fresh (would reduce to about 1.3g dry) and had about a 3.5g (dry) trip before. Plus, it always seems much different. I guess it all depends on the drying process.

Fresh shrooms that are just picked would have more psilocin than the same shroom when dried. That is because psilocin is easily oxidized when exposed to air. However, psilocybin (which the your body converts to psilocin after ingestion) is extremely stable, but does break down rapidly with the application of heat. Therefore if you can eat them fresh, there is definately more bang for the buck.
The only way to really preserve all the psilocin (or close to it) is to freeze dry, which requires the drying to occur in a vacuum (no air) and there for drying could occur without oxidization. This is pretty hard to do and requires some expensive equipment, so it's really not done. But thankfully that psilocybin is so darn stable, it can last for years.

If you are real carefull there is no potency loss. If you see 1 bruise then you have potency loss. Id say that if your shrooms have no bruises dry then there about the same potency as when they were fresh. You ever eaten fresh shrooms?? FUCKIN GROSS!

Well i would say that the dry ones taste queer..otherwise the fresh ones are not too bad at all..really... sip something along with it... anything you like...makes it much more palatable...also if you eat mushrooms like gourmet varieties you will see that they taste about the same...and you develop a taste for them quite well too...my 2c

If you do dry them and want to preserve the potency after drying putting dry ice in a mason jar which is pure carbon dioxide the carbon dioxide gas will dissolve in the jar and push out the oxygen from the jar. It is oxygen that is the real enemy. Just dont close the lid all the way until all the carbon dioxide has melted, or the jar will break. Fresh are alot better, They have the living essence that connects one with all nature.

You are right about the fresh ones tasting more or less like regular mushrooms... but at the same time it was absolutely disgusting (well i guess chewing on any mushrooms plain like that would be pretty gross, but...). Somehow the dry ones were easier to take-- kind alike vaguely dirt-smelling but tasteless styrafoam. Going to have to try to drink/eat something along with them. I guess just trying to shove as many as you can, chew them up and swallow quickly before gagging is not the best strategy

I see a lot of good information here, and some that is obviously just opinion. Let me see if I can add something to this.
http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_info4.shtml
This link will give you the main active ingredients in your shrooms by percentage. I?m not certain of the properties of the Baeocystin but here is some for the Psilocin and Psilocybin.
Psilocin breaks down when exposed to oxygen becoming inactive. When you damage or ?bruise? the cells of a fresh mushroom you expose the Psilocin to the air causing it to oxidize and turn blue. A mushroom that contains a lot of Psilocin will bruise blue easily, reducing its potency with respect to the Psilocin only. If the mushroom is dried completely, all of it?s Psilocin content is lost leaving only Psilocybin which is converted to Psilocin in our bodies. By eating the fresh mushrooms you get both Psilocin and the Psilocybin content, giving you both more and different effects (somewhat faster). Although I couldn?t prove it scientifically, I?m sure some of the Psilocin is lost during digestion. Experience has never shown me that fresh is double the strength of dried as shown in the chart. Many years ago I read an article saying that fresh was 1.4 times stronger than dried by volume. So a 10:1 ratio seems to be pretty close. Example 1g.dried = approx. 10g fresh. Seems to work, at least for Cubes. Keep in mind that with fresh? that sometimes? less CAN be more! As far as the heat goes, I?ve never found any difference in potency using fan drying or a heated dehydrator. Making shroom tea or cooking on top of a pizza seems to work as well. Wiki?s freeze drying sounds interesting, although expensive, and could quite possibly preserve the Psilocin? Interesting J.
Personally, I like Wacked comment? ?Fresh are alot better, They have the living essence that connects one with all nature.?

I'd say fresh shrooms are a lot better. The hardest I've tripped, I ate half an oz of freshly picked shrooms. It was great.

I have noticed that my ability to consume fresh cubensis has drastically fell off with every consumption. For example, I didn't mind the taste of fresh cubes the first few times I dosed and I was able to chew/eat them straight-up. But it has gotten to the point recently that just having one (especially large ones) near my mouth will cause me to gag. The texture of the wet mushroom is what does it for me, I can stand the taste alright. Has anyone else had this degenerative effect over time with mushies?

For me Dry is so much more horrible. I like the taste of fresh mushrooms. Dry the the taste is way too overpowering. I always have to drink some juice as a chaser.

I think if you like regular mushrooms, you can stomach psilocybes a lot easier. I've only eaten shrooms once and they didn't really bother me, and I love having shrooms on pizza and other dishes.... they're awesome on cheese steaks..... yum... anyway the same people that bitch about culinary shrooms bitch about cubensis.
