Sweat = Prozac

Yes, yes, yes. Like it or not folks, the old-fashioned virtues [Eat healthy, excercise, engage in education, etc.] are fun-da-mental.

Just 3 hours a week of moderate aerobic excercise reduces depression by 45 percent - making it as effective as anti-deperessant drugs, say researchers at the Cooper Institute in Colorado. Excercise acts on the neurotransmitters serotonin and neropinephrine, both implicated in depression. The excercise can be spread out over the week, stays study author Andrea Dunn, Ph.D.

Some people take up Martial Arts as a way to keep things "interesting", or may go for Billy Blank's Tae-Bo programs.. Different strokes for different folks.

When the body is weak, it becomes boss. When it is strong and healthy, it follows the mind and spirit.

And another fraction that goes infinitely deeper into the benefits of such healthy principles is breathing.

A central concept for Tao is breath. Without breath, there is no life. You breathe; that brings you oxygen. You breathe; that sustains you. You breathe; that regulates your heartbeat, feeds your brain, makes your blood red. Deeper still: You breathe, and the entire essence of your body is sustained and set into motion. Essence is the biochemical aspect of your body, nurtured by the food you eat, and regulated by the quality of your hormones. When that essence, so intimately tied to breathing, is integrated with your mind, you have the power of spirituality. Breath. Don't crassly think of it as mere gas.

Just as we breathe, so too does the universe breathe. In fact, we can think of the entire medium of life as breath. When the world breathes, all things are sustained. Weather moves as it should. Plants grow as they should. Animals are made strong. The very forces of geology are set into motion. And together, a mighty field of essence is generated, a much larger version of what happens in your own body. Connected to that field is a universal being; of which you are, just as the leaf is a small part of the Tree, or blade of grass to the Ground.

To build the breath, work and excercise diligently. Build stamina and discipline yourself. You will gain great flexibility combined with hardened flesh, and you will be graceful. Immunity to minor physical traumas as well as many kinds of illness will be yours.

Do you want to know how spirituality works? Breathe. Laugh. Eat healthy. Excercise.

Perhaps it is just Breathing alone that is more like Prozac....

As, if you do not breath, in is proven that you will turn BLUE....

Thanks for sharing this important info. This should be your first course of action before considering meds if possible.

This should be your first course of action before considering meds if possible.

Indeed, and with the rampant psychological problem of instant gratification, general laziness and social zombification, it's easy to see why the symptom-reducing business of pill-popping is very popular..

I love that doctors still have to prove that being healthy is a good thing. Someone should set up a prescription workout center.

One thing I've noticed in other people is the tendency to overfocus on only one of the "legs" of Health, thereby creating an imbalance through lack of something else.

For example, some people narrowly focus in their books and intellectualism, disregarding the healthy maintanence of their body and eating a simple and healthy diet.. or vice versa, as you may've implied.

Perhaps from the close-minded addiction to something specific, arises the tendency to create such an unhealthy balance as one obviously over-invests so much time and energy into that subject.

I think the key to maintaining a healthy balance, is simply excercising rationality in allocating time during your day for each of the basic "legs" [or principles] that amount to Healthiness..

In other words, keeping a healthy mixture of various, diverse activities ranging from reading books and magazines, lifting weights and excercising, meditating in silence, taking walks in the forest, cooking food, sexual interaction and so on and so forth. Sex is in itself a form of therapy, just as keeping and developing a good posture is as well. And guess what helps with that? All of the above. Gee, who would've thunk it?

When I was deep in depression, I was working-out 6 days a week and off ALL drugs. It may help some, but is not a "cure".

Swami?? Depressed?? What? No way!

Must've been quite the episode... Most people in such a deep depression probably wouldn't get out of bed, let alone excercise daily, so that obviously shows your core strength well.
But certainly, remaining in rationality and healthy behavior reduced the load?

Could it be inferred that if you had not excercised and stayed off drugs during your depression, you could've taken the darker path and... perhaps not be here today to chill with us sages here in S&P? =/
